Chen Feixia stated: If a mother has experienced umbilical wind (neonatal tetanus) during previous deliveries, the fetus is often constitutionally weak. On the second day after birth, do not wait for symptoms to appear; instead, apply this lamp-fire therapy prophylactically, with nearly 100% efficacy. After birth, if the infant cries frequently but refuses to nurse, sneezes, yawns, or shows loose jaw muscles when attempting to suckle, these are signs that umbilical wind is about to manifest. Immediate application of this lamp-fire therapy is required. For infants presenting with dark blue-black facial complexion, neck twisting and head shaking, body arching backward while rubbing against surfaces, glaring eyes with a blue tint, lateral or vertical gaze deviations, continuous blinking, stiff neck and head, curled tongue with exposed eyes, puckered mouth as if blowing wind, crying and biting, hand movements resembling counting, arm traction or tremors, leg jumping or spasms, erratic behavior, loss of normal demeanor, or any deviation in mental state from the usual, these indicate unclear exterior-interior dynamics preceding convulsions. In such cases, this lamp-fire therapy is extremely effective. For conditions where cold damage has already led to convulsions, opisthotonos (arched back), lateral eye deviation, and bilateral spasms, as well as sudden death due to evil shock, epilepsy, food stagnation affecting the Taiyin spleen/stomach, or various obstructions caused by wind, fire, phlegm, or qi, this lamp-fire therapy is miraculous. For dietary injury to the spleen bones resulting in abdominal distension and visible subcutaneous veins, on the noon hour of the Dragon Boat Festival, apply full-body lamp-fire therapy, then treat at the branching points of the blue veins with lamp-fire. One branch treated with one point will cause the abdominal distension to resolve spontaneously. This therapy holds miraculous power for symptoms caused by obstruction of wind-cold and phlegm-qi. After completing lamp-fire therapy, once the infant's crying subsides, administer half a pill of Jin Su Dan (Golden Millet Pill, detailed formula unspecified in *Yi Zong Ji Cheng*) dissolved in ginger decoction. Wrap the infant in clothing, cover the head and face, and allow them to rest quietly for a moment to restore their spirit and consciousness, after which the illness will seem to vanish. For children with mild exterior syndromes due to seasonal cold damage or common cold, characterized by sweating, normal bowel and bladder functions, normal lips and tongue, and no thirst, dispersing and diffusing treatments will lead to recovery; lamp-fire therapy is contraindicated. For children with pathogenic factors entering the interior, presenting with fever, red face, thirst, constipation, dry cracked lips, tight tongue, red eyes, hot palms and soles, nighttime fever and irritability, yellow tongue coating, flailing limbs, and kicking off covers, these are interior heat syndromes that heal with clearing and draining methods; lamp-fire therapy is strictly contraindicated. For children suffering from severe or chronic illnesses, presenting with physical frailty, bluish-yellow complexion, moist lips and tongue, head shaking, lateral gaze, drowsiness with exposed eyes, emaciation, faint voice and breath, spontaneous or night sweats, vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery, smallpox/measles/rashes/abscesses, chronic cough, chronic malaria, post-hemorrhagic fatigue, listlessness, reduced milk/food intake, deep and fine fingerprint pulse, and spiritless six pulses, these are extreme deficiency syndromes. Lamp-fire therapy is strictly contraindicated because it risks ascending and dispersing vital energy. For all chronic fevers, wasting-thirst syndromes, and malnutrition syndromes characterized by dark emaciation and brittle hair, caused by yin exhaustion, blood weakness, and deficient heat, lamp-fire therapy is strictly contraindicated.
Tu Weisheng stated: The use of lamp-fire therapy in infants is analogous to the use of Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang), and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) in treating cold damage. It should not be used unless the disease is of yin-cold nature, and especially not unless the condition is critical. Therefore, its use outside of umbilical wind is quite rare. However, the Umbilical Wind Lamp-Fire prescription by Xia Yuzhu is considered simple and appropriate. Physicians must clearly recognize these boundaries to avoid harming the infant's life. Regarding his claim that Ke Wu syndrome (illness caused by fright or foul air) and Fire-Phlegm Obstruction syndrome are suitable for lamp-fire therapy, this is somewhat excessive. Ke Wu is caused by foul and toxic qi, often associated with hyperactive heat, and should only be treated with clearing and resolving methods. Fire-Phlegm Obstruction syndrome should also be treated with clearing and draining methods.
