[Preface]
A physician should understand medical principles. One should not rigidly adhere to fixed prescriptions. Evaluating medical skill solely based on prescriptions is superficial. This book is specifically designed for remote and impoverished areas, providing emergency aid in critical situations. It records only simple and rapid methods, without listing complete prescription compositions. Discussions on the six meridians of Cold Damage (Shanghan) are not fully recorded.
Existing medical books circulating in the world include many good editions. However, regarding deficiency/excess and cold/heat patterns, they often lack detailed and systematic analysis. Casual or light application of medicine may lead to errors. In this edition, all items are annotated in detail; users are advised to examine them carefully.
The prescriptions in this collection are either borrowed from ancient texts or transmitted by competent teachers. Although extensive efforts were made to collect them, omissions are inevitable. I occasionally read the book *Ji Ren Zi Ji* (Self-Rescue for Saving People) and found it highly resonant. Therefore, I have widely added and revised content, referencing old texts, and carefully recording their origins, not to claim others' merits as my own.
Compilation was just completed when I fell seriously ill, leaving no time for proofreading. There may be inconsistencies in symptom discussions or contradictions in meaning. I hope contemporary master physicians will guide me on the right path, selecting strengths and teaching weaknesses.
This collection was printed with the original intention of benefiting and rescuing people, made public for all, with absolutely no remuneration sought. Like-minded individuals who wish to print and distribute it will find no reluctance on my part.
(Attached: Apoplexy-like Conditions)
[General Discussion]
Sudden collapse, unconsciousness, phlegm-saliva obstruction, deviation of the mouth and eyes, and inability to move the limbs are generally termed "Zhong Feng" (Wind Stroke). However, the symptoms of Zhong Feng are similar to those of "Zhong Qi" (Qi Strike). Zhong Qi results from sudden collapse due to anger and cannot be treated uniformly as Zhong Feng. In Zhong Feng, the body is warm; in Zhong Qi, the body is cold. Zhong Feng involves much phlegm-saliva, whereas Zhong Qi has none. The pulse in Zhong Feng is floating and corresponds to the Left Renying point; the pulse in Zhong Qi is deep and corresponds to the Right Qikou point. Using Qi-regulating herbs to treat Wind disease is acceptable, but using Wind-dispelling herbs to treat Qi disease is not. Zhong Feng often involves phlegm; do not hastily use Ginseng (Renshen) for tonification, lest the phlegm become more abundant and Qi more obstructed. Be cautious. Yang-type Zhong Feng presents with a red face, locked jaw, upward gaze, stiff body, clenched fists, tremors, and dizziness. Yin-type Zhong Feng presents with a blue-white face, phlegmatic wheezing, cold hands and feet, and profuse sweating. Additionally, there are cases where Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) is deficient, causing sudden collapse resembling Zhong Feng; these patients will have relaxed hands and an open mouth, differing from true Zhong Feng, and should be treated with warming and tonifying medicines. (If all five signs of Zang organ involvement appear—open mouth indicating Heart exhaustion, relaxed hands indicating Spleen exhaustion, closed eyes indicating Liver exhaustion, urinary incontinence indicating Kidney exhaustion, and snoring indicating Lung exhaustion—it is an incurable condition. If only one or two signs appear, treat with heavy doses of Ginseng or use moxibustion.) Furthermore, there are cases of hemiplegia due to Qi and Blood imbalance. If on the left side, it indicates Blood deficiency, suitable for Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction): Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) (each 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong) (1 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root) (2 qian, stir-fried with wine), decocted in water and taken orally. If on the right side, it indicates Qi deficiency, suitable for Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng) (1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (2 qian, stir-fried with earth), Fu Ling (Poria) (2 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (0.5 qian), decocted in water and taken orally. Both formulas can be supplemented with Wind-dispelling and Collateral-unblocking herbs such as Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (1-2 qian), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) (1 qian), Gou Teng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla) (3-5 qian). If phlegm is present, add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). (These two conditions require careful examination; the left side may involve static blood, while the right side may involve damp-phlegm.) By analogy, there are also conditions such as Phlegm Strike, Cold Strike, Summerheat Strike, Food Strike, and Evil Strike. Treat each according to its specific symptoms; do not apply incorrectly. Zhong Feng is the most acute and violent condition. Famous sages of past dynasties have elaborated on it, and excellent methods exist, which should be studied deeply. Firstly, in sudden collapse, medical supplies are often unavailable in time. Therefore, I have selected effective and readily available ancient prescriptions and listed them below, hoping to provide some assistance for emergency treatment through appropriate prescription matching.
[Chuan Xin Fang (Heart-Transmitting Prescription)]
Treats sudden collapse, abundant phlegm-saliva, and difficulty distinguishing deficiency/excess. Move the patient to a wind-sheltered room. Place a basin of charcoal fire and sprinkle rice vinegar on it, allowing the vinegar vapor to enter the nose and mouth. Mild cases recover immediately; severe cases become easier to treat. Do not hastily administer tonics or rice soup, lest the phlegm-saliva remain attached to the heart, causing lifelong chronic illness. (This method can also be used for deficiency-type stroke.)
[Zhong Feng Unconsciousness]
Regardless of whether caused by Wind-Cold, food stagnation, phlegm, or evil spirits, if sudden collapse occurs: Mix half a zhong of fresh Ginger Juice (Sheng Jiang Zhi) with one zhong of Child's Urine (Tong Bian), warm slightly, and灌 (administer orally) to restore consciousness. Alternatively, take Zao Jia (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) (2 liang, remove skin and strings, boil with 1 liang of Ming Fan (Alum) in water until dissolved, dry, and powder) and Bei Xi Xin (Asarum) (5 qian, remove leaves and dirt), grind into fine powder, and blow a small amount into the nose to restore consciousness. Alternatively, fry human fingernails/toenails and decoct in yellow wine to drink for immediate recovery.
[Zhong Feng Jaw Lock]
Rub teeth with Bai Yan Mei (White Salted Plum) to open the jaw without damaging teeth. For any male, female, or child with Zhong Feng presenting with jaw lock and stiff body... [Text cuts off here].
[Zhong Feng Aphasia]
Take Bai Ming Fan (Alum) (2 qian, powdered), dissolve in fresh Ginger Juice, pry open the mouth, and administer. Recovery occurs when phlegm is vomited or swallowed. Alternatively, boil 1 sheng of Ma Liao Dou (Vicia Faba) to a thick syrup consistency, hold in the mouth to speak. Alternatively, take a handful of Ce Bai Ye (Biota Tops), remove stems, mix with a handful of Cong Bai (Scallion White including roots), grind into paste, decoct in 1 jin of Wui Hui Jiu (Unfermented Rice Wine) for ten boils, and take warm. (Note: Biota Tops promote blood circulation and dispel wind; Scallion Whites disperse Qi and resolve phlegm; Wine unblocks collaterals and enhances medicinal power. Drinking several cups allows wind to retreat and Qi to harmonize, making treatment easy.)
[Stroke with Abundant Phlegm and Unconsciousness]
Administer Su He Wan (Styrax Pill) one pill, mixed with Bamboo Sap (Zhu Li) and Ginger Juice (Jiang Zhi). After waking, decoct Bai Zhu (Earth-stir-fried), Dang Gui, Tian Ma (Gastrodia Elata) (each 2 qian), Chuan Xiong, Bo He (Mint), Gui Zhi, Nan Xing (Pinellia Ternata processed with Ginger Juice), and Chen Pi (Citrus Peel) (each 1 qian) in water. Before taking, add one wine cup of Bamboo Sap and two tea spoons of Ginger Juice, mix well, and take.
[Zhong Feng Mouth and Eye Deviation]
Squeeze juice from raw Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), mix with Da Mai Mian (Barley Flour), heat it, and apply hot compress to the chest center. Corrects deviation immediately; avoid excessive application. For mouth deviation, use 5 liang of Zao Jia (remove skin, powder), mix with three-year-old aged vinegar into a paste. Apply to the healthy side opposite the deviation (left deviation applied to right, right to left). Reapply when dry until corrected. Alternatively, mix 1 he of Shi Hui (Quicklime) with vinegar into a mud paste and apply to the unaffected side to correct牵引 (traction/alignment). Moxibustion is best. Points: Ting Hui (in the depression anterior to the tragus, open mouth to locate).
[Zhong Feng Moxibustion]
In cases of sudden collapse, Qi obstruction, drooling, and aphasia where medication is difficult to administer, moxibustion is superior. Points: Bai Hui (center of vertex), Feng Chi (1.5 cun posterior to earlobe, treats lateral and frontal headache), Da Zhui (depression between C7 and T1 spinous processes), Qu Chi (depression at elbow flexion), Zu San Li (3 cun below knee eye, lateral to tibial crest), Jue Gu (also known as Xuanzhong, 3 cun above lateral malleolus, anterior to Feiyang), Jian Shi (1 cun posterior to distal palmar crease). For the above seven points, in cases of mental confusion or limb numbness, regardless of Wind or Qi origin, use mugwort cones the size of mung beans, moxa 3-5 sessions per point. For sudden death of unknown cause, this moxibustion method restores consciousness.
[Zhong Feng Limb Numbness and Itching]
Wash with decoction of Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome). For constipation due to large intestine dryness without deficiency signs: Decoct Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), and Qiang Huo (each 2-3 qian) in water to relieve constipation naturally. (This is San Hua Tang.)
[Tai Xuan Tang]
Treats Zhong Feng with phlegm obstruction and aphasia. Warm and administer one cup of active indigo vat water from cloth dyeing. Restores speech. (Note: Indigo juice resolves Wind-Heat toxins, disperses collateral stagnation and blood stasis. Active dyeing water contains lime which helps drain phlegm-water, following the principle of rising and spreading.)
[Unnamed Pill]
Specifically treats Liver and Kidney Wind disorders, limb numbness, bone pain, weak waist and knees, promotes Large Intestine Qi movement, treats thirty-six types of Wind, including those caused by Cold-Dampness, long-term paralysis. Long-term use yields miraculous effects. Herb: [Name missing in text] (Harvest leaves on May 5th, June 6th, September 9th, wash, dry). Mix with good wine and white honey, sprinkle on leaves, steam in a steamer over boiling water until thoroughly cooked, dry, repeat sprinkling and steaming nine times total. Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills on an empty stomach with white wine. For illnesses lasting 5-7 years, take up to 2000 pills. If symptoms worsen initially, it indicates the medicine is overcoming the disease; continue to 4000 pills for full recovery.
[Fu Ping Yi Li Dan (Duckweed Single Pill)]
Treats Zhong Feng paralysis, thirty-six unnamed Wind diseases, widespread tinea and tinea pedis, and traumatic injuries, fetal convulsions, and tendon spasms. This herb is cold and dispersing, highly effective for Zhong Feng with Fire. Taking 100 pills leads to full recovery. Use Zi Bei Fu Ping (Purple-backed Duckweed) (harvest July 15th, clean, spread on bamboo sieve to dry over a basin of water to facilitate drying). Grind into fine powder, refine honey to make pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill on an empty stomach with Dou Lin Jiu (Bean Dregs Wine).
