Grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and Wanqu. Roots and leaves are harvested in April and dried in the shade. It works well when combined with Poria (Fuling), Abutilon Seeds (Dongkuizi), and Dragon Bone (Longgu). It neutralizes the toxicity of Aconitum Lateralis Preparatum (Tianxiong) and Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi). It is incompatible with Pearl (Zhenzhu), Veratrum (Lilu), Cockroach (Feilian), and Qige. According to records, "Qige" does not appear in standard pharmacopoeias, likely referring to Lily Bulb (Baihe). Wanqu County belongs to Jiyin Commandery, Yanzhou Prefecture; currently, medicinal materials still come from Lanling north of Pengcheng. When used, it should be crushed, the woody core removed, and only the bark taken. Currently, one jin of raw material yields only three liang of bark; market vendors often increase the quantity to deceive. Xiaocao resembles Ephedra (Mahuang) but is green. Polygalae Radix is also used in Daoist immortal formulas.
[Note] "Qige" is recorded in Volume 2 of *Yaolu*.

Only those from Hanzhong, Nanzheng, and Qingyi are preferred, characterized by large size, long shape, and a forked tail, which is considered superior. This herb is prone to rotting and insect damage and must be stored tightly sealed. Leaves are narrow and long, growing in clusters in shallow water. *Xianjing* (Daoist Canon) uses it for grain-abstaining practices. It is also said to make the body light and enable walking on water.
[Note] Runan is no longer used; only those from Jingzhou and Huazhou are considered best.
