[Song] The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five Zang organs; the theories of the Five Wheels and Eight Broad Regions are often considered exaggerated. The white sclera belongs to the Lung, while the black pupil (Shen Guang) belongs to the Liver and Kidney. The red blood vessels belong to the Heart and must be carefully distinguished; the interactions of generation and restriction among the Five Elements should not be allowed to go awry. Generally, symptoms such as redness, swelling, photophobia, pain, dryness, difficulty in opening the eyes, and tearing like hemp indicate a pathogenic fire. Treatment should originally address the fire, and medication should be administered according to the affected meridians to avoid regret. If there is visual blurring, darkness, tearing upon exposure to wind, and internal cataracts with multicolored nebulae, or if one can see near but not far (accompanied by night blindness), nourishing Yin and strengthening Water is the best approach. People nowadays do not investigate the principles of Yin and Yang, but blindly apply acrid and aromatic substances to the eyes.
[Dissertation] The Classics state: "All meridians belong to the eyes." It also states: "The eyes can see when they receive blood." The *Needle Classic* states: "The essence of the five Zang and six Fu organs flows upward into the eyes; therefore, the eyes are the masters of the Zong (Gathering) meridians." The inner and outer canthi, along with the upper eyelid, are areas traversed by the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. The outer canthus belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. The lower eyelid and the area between the two eyes at the bridge of the nose belong to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian connects to the eye system; thus, the function of the eyes is governed by the Liver. The white sclera belongs to the Lung; if it turns red, it indicates Fire invading the Lung. The flesh wheel (eyelids) belongs to the Spleen; redness and swelling of the upper and lower eyelids indicate Fire invading the Spleen. The black water (pupil and spirit light) belongs to the Kidney; multicolored nebulae obscuring the black pupil indicate Kidney deficiency. Shen Guang (spiritual vision) belongs to the Liver; nebulae obscuring the blue-green iris (cornea/sclera area in TCM context) indicate Liver deficiency with hyperactive Fire. Red vessels belong to the Heart; blood vessels penetrating the eye with pain and dryness indicate self-excessive Fire in the Heart. Any sudden onset of redness, swelling, pain, red nebulae, photophobia, continuous tearing, dryness, difficulty in opening, and blurred vision are caused by Fire. The Classics state, "Excess heat causes swelling," which refers to this. By examining the meridian and location and applying draining methods, the disease can be cured immediately. However, chronic dullness, night blindness with inability to see far, internal cataracts, multicolored nebulae, tearing upon wind exposure, dizziness, and vertigo are signs of Blood deficiency, suitable for treatment via strengthening Water and nourishing Yin. There are also cases where excessive use of cold-natured medicines leads to Yang deficiency, causing the Fire to become even more intense; in such cases, warm tonifying agents should be used to treat the condition in accordance with its nature, allowing the Fire to subside naturally and vision to clear. The Classics state: "Enrich the source of Water to control the Sunlight; strengthen the master of Fire to dissipate Yin shadows." This is what is meant. Today's practitioners, when treating eye diseases, only know how to use cold medicines to suppress Fire, unaware of the methods of enriching Water and strengthening Fire. They exclusively use camphor and other acrid, aromatic mineral drugs for eye drops, ignoring the warning that acrid dispersants can damage vision. How sad!
[Pulse Diagnosis] Red eyes indicate a Fire disease. The pulses of the Heart and Liver appear rapid and surging. If these are seen at the Right Cun and Guan positions, it indicates the ministerial Fire rushing upward.
