The meridian of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine originates at the radial end of the index finger (the end of the index finger, where Shangyang LI-1 is located). It follows the radial border of the finger, emerges between the two bones at Hegu LI-4 (Hegu is an acupoint name, located between these two bones). It ascends into the space between two tendons (where Yanggu SI-2 is situated). It follows the radial border of the forearm (the radial border of the forearm, traversing the area distributed by the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian). It enters the lateral aspect of the elbow (the area of Quchi LI-11). It ascends along the anterior border of the lateral aspect of the upper arm, passes the shoulder, and emerges from the anterior border of the acromion (the acromion refers to the bone of the shoulder, so Jianliao TE-14 is located here. Meeting the tip of the bone, it is also named Jianliao bone). It ascends to emerge at the intersection of the pillar bone (the Dazhui GV-14) (Note in *Qi Fu Lun* states: The intersection of the pillar bone is Tianding TE-16. Located above the clavicular fossa on the neck, directly posterior to Futu TE-16 and Qishe ST-10, half cun using the body-cun method). It descends into the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen), connects with the Lung (The Lung is the interior-exterior partner of the Large Intestine, so the Large Intestine meridian network connects to the Lung). It descends through the diaphragm and belongs to the Large Intestine (Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian is exterior-interior related to Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridian, thus it networks with the Lung and belongs to the Large Intestine). Its branch rises from the supraclavicular fossa to the neck (the area behind the laryngeal prominence is called the neck, the back of the neck is called the nape). It penetrates the cheek (cheek refers to the sides of the face). It enters the lower gum, re-emerges flanking the mouth, and crosses at Renzhong (Renzhong, also known as Shuigou, is located below the philtrum). The left meridian flows to the right, and the right meridian flows to the left, ascending to flank both nostrils (Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian intersects with Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian from here). When this meridian undergoes pathological changes, disease occurs (Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian typically has abundant Qi and scarce Blood; when Qi is diseased first, this is called "Shi Dong" [Disease caused by meridian movement]). Symptoms include toothache and swelling of the zygomatic bone (zygoma refers to the prominent bone of the cheek). This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by disorders of Jin Ye (Body Fluids) metabolism (Blood is diseased due to Qi, which is generated by Qi, hence it is called "Suo Sheng Bing" [Diseases generated by the meridian]. The Qi and Blood of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine are typically abundant, which is the normal state of humans. There are exceptions. *Ling Shu* states: In the upper part of Hand-Yangming, if Qi and Blood are abundant, facial hair is beautiful; if Blood is scarce and Qi is abundant, the complexion is dark; if both are scarce, there is no facial hair. In the lower part, if Qi and Blood are abundant, axillary hair is beautiful and hand skin/muscles are warm; if both are scarce, hands are emaciated and cold. From this, one can know the abundance or scarcity of Qi and Blood in Hand-Yangming Large Intestine). Symptoms also include yellow eyes, dry mouth, rhinorrhea or epistaxis (Wang Bing said: Clear fluid from the nose is Qiu, blood from the nose is Xu). Throat obstruction (Bi), pain in the anterior shoulder, pain and dysfunction of the index and thumb. When pathogenic factors are excessive, heat and swelling occur at the sites traversed by the meridian; when deficiency exists, chills occur that do not easily resolve (Li means shivering. Excess Yin and insufficient Yang cause chills). In excess patterns, the Renying ST-7 pulse is three times larger than the Cunkou pulse; in deficiency patterns, the Renying pulse is smaller than the Cunkou pulse.
The Luo-connecting vessel of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine is named Pianli LI-6. It is three cun distal to the wrist crease, diverges to enter Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Its branch ascends to the elbow, follows the arm, traverses the shoulder, ascends to the submandibular region, and spreads over the face. Another branch enters the ear and converges with the Zong Mai (Ancestral Vessels). In excess patterns, dental caries and deafness occur; in deficiency patterns, cold teeth and bi-syndrome with obstruction occur. Treatment involves selecting the divergent point.
The sinews of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine originate at the ends of the index and thumb. They knot at the wrist, follow the arm, and ascend to knot at the lateral elbow. They ascend to knot at the shoulder. Their branch winds around the scapula and flanks the spine. The straight branch ascends from the shoulder to the neck. Its branch ascends to the cheek and knots at the chin (Ken). The straight branch ascends anterior to Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine, ascends to the left frontal angle, networks the head, and descends to the right mandible. Diseases occur at the sites traversed, manifesting as supporting pain and muscle spasms (Zhuan Jin), inability to raise the shoulder, and inability to turn the head left or right. Treatment uses Fan Zhen Jie Ci (burning needle rapid puncture), with the number of sessions determined by clinical improvement, and painful points used as acupoints. This condition is called Meng Xia Bi (Early Summer Bi Syndrome).
When evil invades the Luo-connecting vessels of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine, it causes Qi stagnation, chest fullness, panting, hypochondriac distension, and chest heat. Puncture the corner of the nail on the index finger, one cun from the corner, on each side (Shangyang LI-1). Treat left with right, right with left, resolving after about the time it takes to eat a meal.
When evil invades the Luo-connecting vessels of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine, it causes deafness and intermittent hearing loss. Puncturing Shangyang LI-1 restores hearing immediately; if ineffective, puncture the junction of the nail and flesh on the middle finger to restore hearing immediately. If hearing does not return, puncture is contraindicated. For wind sensation in the ear, treat similarly. Left treated with right, right with left. If Hand-Yangming points fail, puncture the meridian emerging anterior to the ear.
For heat diseases presenting with arm pain, puncture Hand-Yangming Large Intestine and Hand-Taiyin Lung meridians; sweating stops the disease.
Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian runs from hand to head, five chi long, ten chi total for both sides. It contains forty acupoints.
