The formula addresses the third month of winter when Yin Qi is external and Yang Qi is internal. One should externally assist Yang Qi without inducing sweating, and internally dissipate Yin Fire without causing diarrhea; this is the key to thorough conservation. In deep winter, Water Qi is prosperous; when Water is prosperous, Metal is prosperous. The child makes the mother full. The Lung is the mother of the Kidney. The Yang of the skin and hair is originally weak. With the assistance of the Winter season's command, patients often sneeze, have clear nasal discharge, and if the cold is severe, turbid discharge. Sneezing persists, and they are more averse to wind and cold than ordinary people. They have frequent but scanty urination, or drink above and urinate below, with clear and abundant urine. Bowel movements are irregular. At night, they feel cold and cannot sleep. Severe cases may develop phlegm-cough, vomiting, hiccups, spitting white foam, opening the mouth and staring eyes, and failure of Qi to connect, feeling like a lump in the throat. In severe cases, walking becomes difficult, and they lean to one side as if falling. To curb the pathogenic Qi, treatment is not needed for cure.
