The so-called "Bone Steaming" (Gu Zheng), along with Fu Lian Shi Zhu, Lao Zhu, Chong Zhu, Du Zhu, Re Zhu, Leng Zhu, Shi Zhu, Gui Zhu, etc., are all collectively referred to as "Chuan Shi" (a term for infectious, hereditary chronic consumptive diseases).
Generally, it manifests as aversion to cold and fever, night sweats. Dreams of intercourse with ghosts or spirits, seminal emission or white turbid discharge, dry and erect hair. Or masses in the abdomen, or small tubercles on both sides behind the head.
These symptoms gather or scatter; the patient is depressed and silent, coughing with phlegm and saliva, or spitting up pus and blood, resembling Lung Wei (Lung Atrophy) and Fei Yong (Lung Abscess). Or dysentery, emaciation, exhaustion beyond bearing.
Accumulating over months and years, leading to death. After death, the pathogenic qi transmits to others, even wiping out the entire family.
There are also Fei Shi, Han Shi, Sang Shi, Shi Zhu, etc., called the "Five Corpses." These are various attachments syndromes. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where the patient suffers, so treatments attack based on the Three Causes (Internal, External, Non-internal/External).
Internally, it is not caused by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sorrow, Fear, Fright); externally, it is not invaded by the Four Qi (Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness). The parasites seem to attach internally, but given the multifarious nature of these syndromes and their migratory transmission, they are hard to predict.
Therefore, from ancient times to the present, fewer than one in ten recover. Formulas such as Fox Bone, Otter Liver, and Tian Ling Gai (Skull Cap) have been recorded in antiquity but have rarely shown efficacy. Only through careful self-preservation and regimen can one cut off the source of the disease.
(If the pathogen) causes salivation, the disease has transmitted to the Spleen. The patient experiences aversion to cold and fever, red face with white nose, dry and broken hair, coughing and wheezing, spitting purulent bloody saliva; this indicates transmission to the Lung.
The patient experiences aversion to cold and fever, yellow face with withered earlobes, sore and painful legs, white turbid urine, enuresis with abdominal pain; this indicates transmission to the Kidney.
There are twenty-four types of "Lao Zheng" (Consumptive Steaming), which can be verified according to the syndromes.
Dry and broken hair, rough skin like scales; the steaming is in the Skin. Outsiders feel heat, but the patient feels cold internally; body tremors and muscle twitching; the steaming is in the Muscle.
Withered hair, epistaxis, or hematuria recurring; the steaming is in the Blood. Body heat and irritability, pain like needle pricks; the steaming is in the Meridians/Vessels.
Distress in Zhongwan (CV12) and Danzhong (CV17); the steaming is in the San Jiao (Triple Burner). Red and yellow urine, turbid like paste; the steaming is in the Bladder. Irregular bowel movements, either constipation or diarrhea, borborygmus in the abdomen; the steaming is in the Small Intestine.
Dull pain in the large abdomen, dry and painful mouth and tongue; the steaming is in the Large Intestine. Dry mouth and nose, abdominal distension with spontaneous sweating, restless sleep; the steaming is in the Stomach.
Bitter taste in the mouth, deafness, pain under the bilateral hypochondrium; the steaming is in the Gallbladder. Tenesmus, anal涩 (stagnant) constipation; the steaming is in the Hui Chang (Rectum). Abdominal pain, flaccid sinews and vessels, abnormal erection of the genitalia; the steaming is in the Zong Jin (Tendon Master).
Tearing, vertigo, frequent irritability and anger; the steaming is in the Liver. Blackened dry tongue, shortness of breath, distress and shivering; the steaming is in the Heart.
Dry lips and mouth ulcers, chest and abdominal distension, aversion to cold and anorexia; the steaming is in the Spleen. Coughing, wheezing, fullness, spitting phlegm and vomiting blood, hoarseness; the steaming is in the Lung.
Withered earlobes, sore and painful lower limbs (Hong Xiang Jiao/Jock Itch or Leg Qi difficulty), inability to rise and lie down; the steaming is in the Kidney.
Continuous white vaginal discharge; the steaming is in the Right Kidney. Pericardium meridian pathology, chest diaphragm obstruction, attacking pain, distress during flexion and extension.
Although the symptoms differ, the root often involves worms gnawing at the Heart and Lungs. Treatment must eliminate the root.
The *Neijing* states: There is a disease with chest fullness. Upon onset, the patient first smells a fishy and foul odor, secretes clear fluid, vomits blood first, has cold limbs, swollen eyes, and frequent bleeding from the anterior and posterior orifices. This disease is named "Xue Ku" (Blood Dryness/Withering).
If sexual activity occurs while intoxicated, depleting Qi and injuring the Liver, menstruation becomes scanty or ceases. The Liver stores Blood and receives Heavenly Yi Qi.
The meridians pass through the diaphragm and spread to the hypochondrium. Now, due to loss of blood and essence, Liver Qi has become rebellious, causing blood depletion and lack of nourishment, resulting in hypochondriac fullness and obstruction of food intake.
Because Liver disease transmits to the Spleen and Stomach, upon onset, the patient smells a fishy and foul odor and secretes clear fluid. Because Liver disease allows Lung Qi to invade, there is vertigo and frequent bleeding from the anterior and posterior orifices. These are all syndromes of Liver disease and Blood Dryness.
Formulas:
He Che Wan (River Boat Pill) (from *Da Quan Liang Fang*), treats Lao Sou (consumptive cough), all forms of Lao Zhai (consumptive disease), deficiency damage, and Gu Zheng (bone steaming).
He Che (Placenta Humanum / Zi He Che) (one placenta of a newborn male is best. Wash clean of blood in flowing water, boil until cooked, stir-fry, break into small pieces by hand, and bake dry. Must be ground into powder within one day; if left overnight, it will not dry properly nor form powder. Materia Medica records that treating Lao Zhai with placenta from a newborn is especially good. It boosts blood and Qi. For emaciated women with labor injury, dark skin, and various internal abdominal diseases leading to gradual wasting, mix with Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra) and administer as per treatment method. Do not let the patient know. Also effective for epidemic febrile diseases. Placenta buried in soil for seven to eight years turns into water, clarified like pure water. In the South, people bury it mixed with Gan Cao (Licorice) and Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga) for three to five years, then dig it up for use.)
