1. The appearance of the Fu Fei (Cauldron Boiling) pulse is like boiling soup surging up. When seeking and pressing with the fingers, it feels as if the center rises while the periphery flows outward. There is advancement and retreat, but absolutely no rhythmic interval. It is seen merely as fire flowing from Yang.
2. The appearance of the Yu Xiang (Fish Swimming) pulse resembles a fish swimming on the water surface; only the tail wags while the body and head remain motionless. The pulse floats on the skin, neither advancing nor retreating. Under the fingers... [text missing] ...one can know the disease's status. If occurring at midday, death occurs at midnight; if occurring at midnight, death occurs at midday.
3. The appearance of the Dan Shi (Finger Flicking Stone) pulse is firm and rapid, coming slowly and departing quickly. Seeking it under the fingers, it reaches a beat and then abruptly ceases, metaphorically like a finger flicking a stone, sounding "pi pi" hard and unyielding. As stated in Su Wen... 4. The appearance of the Jie Suo (Untying Rope) pulse feels scattered and chaotic under the fingers, with no standard respiratory rhythm. It gathers or scatters, like an untied rope without any constraint. This arises because the Qi of the Kidney and Ming Men (Gate of Vitality)... [text missing] ...enclosing... Excess patterns... manifest externally...
5. The appearance of the Wu Lou (House Leaking) pulse is like water leaking from a roof, dripping continuously yet disconnected. It comes and stops intermittently, moving and resting alternately. Its diagnosis is similar to this. It is called the Xu Wu Lou (Deficient House Leaking) pulse.
6. The appearance of the Xia You (Shrimp Swimming) pulse, when sought under the fingers, resembles a shrimp swimming on the water surface, neither advancing nor retreating. Suddenly it startles and departs; searching gently, it vanishes completely. After a moment, it faintly reappears under the fingers. During examination, it remains still, then suddenly leaves. Among the abnormal states of pulses, some are entirely similar to this, hence named Xia You (Shrimp Swimming).
7. The appearance of the Que Zhuo (Sparrow Pecking) pulse comes rapidly and frequently, interrupting and stopping often, returning after a long pause, resembling the manner of a sparrow pecking for food. It generally comes three times and goes four times.
8. The appearance of the Yan Dao (Reclining Knife) pulse feels like tracing the edge of a knife under the fingers, sounding "ze ze" with no advance or retreat, and its rate is irregular, thus named Yan Dao (Reclining Knife). This is due to the depletion of Heart Yuan Blood, where the image of True Fire has no place to reside, while Stomach Qi stands alone, unable to guide and connect mutually. Such is the injury to the True Heart. The Heart governs Blood, and the Lung governs Qi... [text missing] ...leading to death.
9. The appearance of the Zhuan Dou (Rotating Bean) pulse responds to the finger,浑然 (hunran - naturally/wholly) like a bean rotating and turning, neither advancing nor retreating, with absolutely no rhythmic interval. Hence it is called Zhuan Dou (Rotating Bean).
10. The appearance of the Ma Cu (Hemp Urgent) pulse responds to the finger like hemp seeds being short and urgent, scattered and mixed, lacking any sense of harmony. Generally, the signs of hemp growth vary. In mild cases, death occurs within three days; in severe cases, death occurs during the Yin hour.
