Cough and vomiting are caused by the invasion of cold pathogenic factors into both the Lung and the Stomach. The Lung prefers warmth to ensure the free flow of Qi, while the Stomach requires warmth to digest food. Although these two Zang-Fu organs differ in nature, they share the common characteristic of fearing cold. When the Lung is affected by slight cold, it leads to cough; when cold flows into the Stomach, it results in vomiting. The *Neijing* states: "The manifestation of Stomach cough involves coughing accompanied by vomiting." It also says: "Pathogenic factors gather in the Stomach and affect the Lung," which refers to this condition. The Qi of all five Zang organs is derived from the Lung. When the Lung is invaded by cold, cough ensues. Cold combats with Qi, causing Qi to gather and return to the Lung. When the pathogen moves, Qi becomes turbulent and rushes upward. Upward rushing of Qi damages the five Zang organs. When it disturbs the Stomach Qi, the Stomach Qi rebels upward, leading to vomiting. This is how Lung Qi stagnation from cough disturbs the Stomach, causing vomiting. Additionally, during summer when Lung function is robust, if Spleen Qi is weak and fails to flourish, cold injury to the Spleen causes cough, termed "Spleen Cough." Its symptoms include pain under the right hypochondrium upon coughing, radiating faintly to the back and shoulders; severe cases render movement impossible, as movement triggers cough. Since the Spleen and Stomach are exterior-interior related, persistent Spleen Cough transmits to the Stomach. Symptoms include cough with vomiting; severe vomiting may result in the expulsion of roundworms. Generally, severe cough of any type may lead to vomiting. Treatment should be based on syndrome differentiation, identifying the affected Zang-Fu organs.
