The Lung governs Qi. Its condition is reflected in the skin and hair (mao pi). When Qi is deficient, slight cold pathogens easily invade the skin and hair, damaging the Lung. Insufficiency of Lung Qi leads to coughing. Qi becomes unobstructed and fluent when warmed, but becomes stagnant and astringent when exposed to cold. Deficiency results in insufficient Qi, which is forced by cold pathogens to gather between the lungs, unable to disperse and emit. Thus, coughing and shortness of breath occur.
