Ben Shi Fang records: In the year Guichou of Shaoxing, while waiting for appointment in Siming, I had a patient named Mr. Dong suffering from restlessness of Shen Qi. Whenever he slept, his Hun (Ethereal Soul) would fly away, feeling his body was in bed while his soul wandered outside. Everyone thought it was a Heart disease. I said, "Based on the pulse, it is pathogenic factors affecting the Liver Meridian, not a Heart disease. The Liver Meridian is affected by pathogenic factors due to deficiency. The Liver stores the Hun. Abnormal wandering of the Hun causes changes. In healthy people, the Liver is not affected by pathogens, so when sleeping, the Hun returns to the Liver, Shen is calm, and sleep is achieved. Now, because there are pathogens in the Liver, the Hun cannot return, so when sleeping, the Hun feels like it leaves the body." The Liver governs anger; slight anger exacerbates the condition. Dong Xin said, "I have never heard this before. Although I haven't taken medicine yet, I already feel the heaviness leaving my body. I wish to obtain the prescription." I said, "Hold onto this theory and discuss the treatment with other doctors, then verify slowly." Ten days later he returned, saying, "Doctors discussed ancient and modern prescriptions, none matched the Heart." So I prescribed Zhenzhu Wan and Duhuo Tang. After taking these two formulas for one month, he recovered. Mother-of-pearl shell is the Sovereign herb, Dragon Tooth is the Assistant. Pearl enters the Liver Meridian primarily; Dragon Tooth enters the Liver because they are of the same category. Dragon Tooth calms the Heart, but unknown to many, Dragon Tooth calms the Hun, while Tiger Eye stabilizes the Po. This refers to their respective categories. The Azure Dragon of the East belongs to the Liver and stores the Hun; the White Tiger of the West belongs to the Lung and stores the Po. The Dragon can change, so the Hun wanders and is unstable; the Tiger is tranquil, so the Hun stops and has control. For treating flying Hun, Dragon Tooth should be used. All things have inherent principles that are not spoken; it depends on human understanding.
