[Appendix Discussion]
The Zang and Fu organs all contain Jin Ye (Body Fluids). If internal deficiency of the Five Zang organs generates heat, the pathogenic heat accumulates internally, leading to exhaustion and scarcity of body fluids, thus causing thirst.
Those suffering from thirst prefer drinking water; such individuals invariably experience mental restlessness (Fan), dizziness, coldness in the back, and vomiting. All these symptoms arise due to internal deficiency. Upon pulse diagnosis, a markedly slippery Heart pulse indicates a predisposition to thirst. Trauma or overwork damaging the Zang and Fu organs, or incomplete recovery after a severe illness, leads to insufficiency of Qi and Blood. Yin deficiency generates internal heat; this heat scorches the fluids, causing them to become dry and scarce, resulting in thirst and the desire to drink. However, fluid intake cannot be excessive; excessive drinking leads to abdominal fullness that does not dissipate, because deficient Qi is unable to transform and transport water.
