Bone steaming disease has five types. The first is called bone steaming, with its root in the Kidney. In the morning upon waking, the body feels cool; by evening, there is a sensation of dry heat. The four limbs are uncomfortable, food and drink have no taste, urine is dark yellow, the spirit is恍惚 (trance-like) and irritable/confused, breathing is rapid and weak, the lower back and back often hurt, the two feet feel cold upwards, and the palms of the hands are constantly hot. If bone steaming becomes severe and causes excessive damage, it internally transforms into *gan* (wasting-and-thirsting syndrome), eroding the five zang organs. The second is called pulse steaming, with its root in the Heart. There is increasing irritability and oppression daily, flinging hands and kicking feet, a slight desire for water, excessive spitting of white foam, talking wildly during sleep, fear and restlessness. The pulse is floating and rapid. During severe steaming, it may transform into *gan*, with distension and pain below the umbilicus, or incessant diarrhea. The third is called skin steaming, with its root in the Lung. There is heavy panting and shortness of breath, dryness in the nose and mouth, a white tongue color, and urine resembling blood. During severe steaming, chest fullness with heat pouring in, distension under both hypochondria, coughing with chest and back pain, and restless sleep occur. Steaming toxins injuring the lung leads to hemoptysis. The fourth is called flesh steaming, with its root in the Spleen. The body is hot like fire, irritable without sweating, abdominal distension like a drum, nausea after eating, urine resembling blood, and constipation with difficulty. During severe steaming, general edema and red eyes may appear, along with restless sleep. The fifth is called internal steaming, also known as blood steaming. It is called internal steaming because it necessarily presents with external cold and internal heat; touching the bones reveals internal heat. Its root lies within the five zang and six fu organs. This condition arises after suffering from a febrile disease. The flesh and bones waste away, food and drink have no taste, or the skin is dry and lusterless. During steaming episodes, the four limbs gradually become weak, and the heels swell. There are additionally twenty-three types of steaming: 1. Bladder steaming, yellow-red urine; 2. Jade Chamber steaming, seminal emission and leakage in men, irregular menstruation in women; 3. Brain steaming, dizziness and stifling heat; 4. Marrow steaming, boiling heat in marrow, mental confusion; 5. Bone steaming, black teeth; 6. Tendon steaming, brittle nails; 7. Blood latent (Blood steaming), brittle hair; 8. Pulse steaming, laxity or stiffness disregarding propriety; 9. Liver steaming, dizziness before hunger; 10. Heart steaming, dry tongue; 11. Spleen steaming, wasted flesh; 12. Lung steaming, dry nose; 13. Kidney steaming, dry and scorched ears; 14. Bladder steaming, right ear scorched; 15. Gallbladder steaming, white sclera, frequent fright; 16. Stomach steaming, pain under the tongue; 17. Small Intestine steaming, heat in the lower jiao, painful urination; 18. Large Intestine steaming, pain in the right nostril; 19. Sanjiao steaming, alternating fever and chills; 20. Flesh steaming, muscle emaciation; 21. Qi steaming, panting and shortness of breath; 22. Skin steaming, affecting tendons and skin, causing contraction; 23. Whole-body steaming, hot body qi. Generally, various steaming ailments arise from consuming beef, mutton, or greasy foods after a febrile disease, or from violating dietary/sexual restrictions. If this disease persists with long-term steaming, it often leads to critical conditions. Early treatment is essential.
Formulas
Treating the Five Steamings. "Steaming" refers to the qi of attached and steaming toxic heat, which is a gradual approach to death. Quack doctors do not recognize it, failing to understand the shape of toxic heat, and sometimes falsely attribute it to spirits, causing confusion. This leads to severe steaming transforming into *gan*, resulting in death. The following formulas are provided.
First, Bone Steaming (from *Qianjin Fang*).
Use Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) taken with water. Take twice daily, morning and evening. Alternatively, crush Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), mix with honey, and make pills the size of Wu-tong seeds. Take seven pills per dose, twice daily, with rice water. No dietary restrictions. Stop when the body feels light and cool.
Second, Pulse Steaming.
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) and Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen) (each 2 liang); Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang, prepared). Cut the herbs. Boil in 4 sheng of water until 1.5 sheng remains. Divide into three parts. Hold the decoction in a sheep bladder and enema via a reed tube into the lower orifice. If urination does not improve, take approximately 1 liang of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) mixed with cold water. Repeat doses. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum) and Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis).
Third, Skin Steaming.
Immediately administer 1 liang of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) in 1.5 sheng of water, divided into three doses over three days. After stopping, soak hands in cold water and apply compresses to the hypochondrium and axillae.
Fourth, Flesh Steaming.
Use Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 1.5 liang, cut like small beans. Soak in 1 sheng of water overnight. Squeeze out the juice the next morning. Take about 5 he. Stop if mild diarrhea occurs. If heat is uncontrolled, take approximately 1 liang of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) three times daily. Stop when the body cools.
Fifth, Internal Steaming (from *Zhouhou Fang*).
It is called internal steaming because external cold and internal heat attach to the bones. The root is in the five zang and six fu organs, occurring after illness. Flesh and bones waste, food tastes bland, or skin is dry and dull. During steaming, limbs thin, and heels swell.
Use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 10 liang, ground like milk powder. Mix and take orally. Twice daily, morning and evening. Stop when the body cools.
