Treats alcohol-induced phlegm-fluid retention (Jiu Xi) and fluid accumulation leading to vomiting of sour water. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Pao Zhi Gan Jiang (Prepared Rhizoma Zingiberis), Gegen (Radix Puerariae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, pulp removed, sliced, bran-fried), Juhong (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, radix removed, cleaned), each half tael; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae); Banxiaqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, one tael); Zhi Gancao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae); Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in hot water seven times, dried, one fen).
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, swallowed with warm water. In the Jiayin year, these two formulas proved effective.
Treats accumulations (Ji Ju) and fluid retention where phlegm-dampness generates parasites; if prolonged, this may transform into regurgitation (Fanwei) or stomach abscess (Weiyong). The theory is discussed in *Lingshu* and *Chaoshi Bingyuan*.
Yuanhua (Radix Genkwa, vinegar-processed and dried, weighed, one tael); Ganxi (Resina Taxodi); Yelangyagen (Radix Siegesbeckiae); Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, fried until yellow); Lilu (Radix Veratri, fried); Binglang (Semen Arecae), each half tael; Badou (Semen Crotonis, ten seeds, fried until slightly blackish-yellow).
Grind the above into a fine powder, bind with vinegar paste, and form pills the size of red beans. Take two to three pills per dose initially, gradually increasing to five to seven pills, taken before meals with ginger decoction.
Volume 6, *Bingneng Lun*, states: The Yellow Emperor asked, "How should one diagnose a patient suffering from stomach abscess?" Qibo replied, "Diagnosis requires examining the Stomach pulse; it should be deep and fine. If deep and fine but with rebellious Qi, the Renying pulse will be extremely full. Fullness indicates heat. The Renying pulse corresponds to the Stomach meridian. Rebellious and full Qi causes heat to gather at the gastric opening without circulating, thus forming an abscess in the epigastrium."
This formula, when taken regularly, resolves phlegm, dissipates hardness, and eliminates parasites. I suffered from fluid-phlegm retention for thirty years. In my later years, I often experienced heartburn. When phlegm-fluid surged, I would vomit; sometimes drinking half a cup of water quickly would stop it. This likely matches this syndrome. Reading *Chaoshi Bingyuan Lun* on alcohol-induced mass (Jiu Xia): "Drinking excessively while eating little leads to gradual emaciation over time. The patient constantly desires alcohol; without it, they vomit, sleep excessively, and lose appetite. This is caused by worms in the stomach, named 'Alcohol Xia'. This medicine treats it, provided alcohol is strictly prohibited for easier cure; otherwise, it is useless."
Volume 19 of *Chaoshi Bingyuan Lun* on Accumulations and Masses states: "Accumulations and masses in humans arise from irregular diet and weak Zang-Fu organs; after a long time, they take physical form."
Once, a man and his slave both suffered from turtle-mass (Bie Xia). After the slave died, a white turtle was found in his abdomen. Someone riding a white horse came to see it; the horse urinated, and the urine flowed onto the turtle. The turtle retracted its head and legs. Immediately, the horse urine was poured down its throat, and the turtle dissolved into water. The master said, "My illness will heal." He drank it and indeed recovered.
I have had two chronic conditions throughout my life: bleeding from the lower Zang-Fu organs, and fluid retention in the diaphragm. The bleeding stopped intermittently, but the fluid retention never ceased. Initially, because I used to sit up late writing essays, leaning to the left on the desk, food tended to settle on the left side. After midnight, feeling tired, I would drink two or three cups of wine. When lying down to sleep, I slept on my left side. When my Qi and blood were vigorous, I felt no discomfort. After three to five years, I noticed the wine only flowed down the left side, making a gurgling sound, accompanied by hypochondriac pain and significantly reduced appetite. Every ten days or so, I would vomit several sheng of sour, bitter water. In summer, only the right side of my body sweated and remained moist, while the diseased left side remained completely dry. I visited many famous doctors and tried various prescriptions, with little effect. Occasionally, symptoms relieved, but only lasted a month before recurring. I tried tonifying methods like Tianxiong, Fuzi, and Fanshi, and purging methods like Qianniu, Gansui, and Daji, trying them all. Later, I reasoned that a phlegm-nodule had formed, like a puddle with depressions; water does not flow until the depressions are filled. Clear fluids could flow, but turbid fluids remained stagnant because there was no outlet to drain them. Thus, every five to seven days, I would vomit them out, and after a few days of relief, the condition would return. The Spleen belongs to Earth and dislikes dampness, while water flows toward damp areas. Therefore, drying the Spleen to overcome dampness and strengthening Earth to fill the depressions should eliminate the disease. Consequently, I discontinued all other medicines and took only Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis). After three months, the disease vanished. For several years thereafter, I did not vomit or regurgitate, my chest and diaphragm felt open, and my appetite returned. In summer, I sweated evenly over my whole body and felt cool, and water drank normally descended. Previously, fluid retention had soaked the Liver, causing frequent dizziness and blurred vision; afterward, I could read small print under lamplight, all due to the power of Cangzhu.
The method is as follows: Take one jin of Cangzhu, remove the skin and grind into powder. Use half a liang of raw Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), add two zhan of water, grind and filter to extract juice. Cook fifteen large dates (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) until soft, remove skin and pits, and mash. Mix the sesame juice evenly with the date paste to form a thin paste. Combine with the Cangzhu powder, pound thoroughly in a mortar, and form pills the size of wutong seeds. Dry them. Swallow fifty pills daily on an empty stomach with salted water, increasing to one hundred, then two hundred pills. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrows, and pigeons. Initially, taking the pills may cause slight dryness in the chest/diaphragm; temporarily use Maoshu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae) to counteract it. If dryness becomes severe, take one dose of Shanzhi San (Gardenia Powder). Over time, the dryness subsides. After taking it for half a year, I used only highly pungent and drying herbs, peeled and unsoaked, which were potent yet naturally non-drying. Shanzhi San consists solely of dried Gardenia fruit (Gardeniae Fructus), ground into powder, and taken with boiling water. Thus, one must know that sitting for long periods without changing posture is harmful; occasional movement is also a method of regulation.
