The *Gu Kong Lun* (Treatise on Bone Holes) states: When the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) is diseased, men suffer from seven types of internal hernias (Ji Shen), and women suffer from leukorrhea and abdominal masses. When the Du Mai (Governor Vessel) is diseased, there is a sensation of Qi rushing upward from the lower abdomen to the heart with pain, accompanied by obstruction of urination and defecation; this is called Chong Hernia (Chong Shi).
The *Chang Ci Jie Lun* (Treatise on Long Piercing Sections) states: When the disease is located in the lower abdomen, with abdominal pain and inability to pass urine or stool, it is named Hernia (Shan). It arises from cold. One should needle between the lower abdomen and the thighs, and between the loins and the hip bones. Needle frequently until the area feels warm, then the disease will resolve.
The *Jing Mai Pian* (Chapter on Meridians) states: Liver disease of the Foot-Jueyin channel affects men with hernias and women with swelling of the lower abdomen. Diseases generated by the Liver include undigested diarrhea (Sun Xie) and Fox Hernia (Hu Shan). The collateral vessel of the Foot-Jueyin channel runs up the shin to the testis and knots at the penis. If its Qi rebels, the testis swells and sudden hernia occurs; in excess conditions, the penis stands erect and long; in deficiency conditions, there is sudden itching. Treatment involves selecting the point where the collateral branches off.
The *Miao Ci Lun* (Treatise on Miraculous Puncture) states: When pathogenic factors lodge in the collaterals of the Foot-Jueyin channel, they cause sudden hernia and acute pain. One should needle one point each at the upper aspect of the nail of the big toe, at the junction with the flesh. Treat the left side with the right point, and the right side with the left point.
The *Mai Jie Pian* (Chapter on Pulse Explanation) states: What the Jueyin channel refers to as hernia, along with swelling of the lower abdomen in women, occurs because Yin Qi is excessive and the pulse is distended and obstructed; thus it is called Shan Hernia.
The *Yin Yang Bie Lun* (Treatise on Differences between Yin and Yang) states: Disease of the Three Yang channels presents with aversion to cold and fever; if transmitted, it becomes hernia.
The *Jing Jin Pian* (Chapter on Sinews) states: Disease of the sinews of the Foot-Yangming channel causes hernia and tension of abdominal sinews. Disease of the sinews of the Foot-Taiyin channel causes twisting pain in the genitalia, radiating downward to pull on the umbilicus and both hypochondria. Disease of the sinews of the Foot-Jueyin channel causes dysfunction of the genitalia; injury from internal causes leads to impotence, injury from cold leads to retraction of the penis, and injury from heat leads to flaccidity and inability to retract.
The *Xie Qi Zang Fu Bing Xing Pian* (Chapter on Pathogenic Factors and Organ Manifestations) states: Small Intestine disease manifests as lower abdominal pain, pain in the lumbar spine radiating to the testis, and frequent urgency to defecate.
The *Si Shi Qi Pian* (Chapter on Four Seasons and Acupuncture) states: Lower abdominal pain pulling to the testis, connecting to the lumbar spine, and rushing upward to the heart indicates pathogenic factors in the Small Intestine. These connect to the testicular ligaments, belong to the spine, penetrate the Liver and Lung, and link to the Heart system. Excess Qi causes rebellion, rushing upward to the stomach and intestines, steaming the Liver, dispersing into the Huang (Diaphragm/Blind area), and knotting at the umbilicus.
The *Yu Ji Zhen Zang Lun* (Treatise on the True Organs of the Jade Machine) states: Therefore, Wind is the leader of all diseases. If untreated, the Spleen transmits disease to the Kidney, named Shan Jia (Hernia and Mass). There is heat and pain in the lower abdomen, and discharge of white fluid; this is also called Gu (Parasitic Disease).
The *Ben Cang Pian* (Chapter on Original Storage) states: If the Kidney is positioned low, there is pain in the lower back and buttocks, preventing bending and stretching; this is called Hu Hernia (Fox Hernia).
The *Ping Ren Qi Xiang Lun* (Treatise on Normal People's Pulse Phenomena) states: A Cun Kou pulse that is deep and weak indicates cold-heat alternation and hernia/jia mass with lower abdominal pain. A rapid/tense pulse also indicates hernia/jia mass with lower abdominal pain.
The *Mai Yao Jing Wei Lun* (Treatise on Essential subtleties of Pulse Diagnosis) states: Diagnosing an urgent Heart pulse indicates Xin Hernia (Heart Hernia), and there should be a palpable mass in the lower abdomen.
The *Xie Qi Zang Fu Bing Xing Pian* (Chapter on Pathogenic Factors and Organ Manifestations) states: A slightly slippery Heart pulse indicates Heart Hernia pulling to the umbilicus and bowel sounds in the lower abdomen. A very slippery Liver pulse indicates hernia. A slightly large Spleen pulse indicates Qi hernia; a very slippery Spleen pulse indicates strangury; a choppy Spleen pulse indicates intestinal obstruction; a slightly choppy Spleen pulse indicates internal obstruction with frequent passage of pus and blood. A very slippery Kidney pulse indicates strangury.
The *Da Qi Lun* (Treatise on Great Wonders) states: A large, urgent, and deep Kidney pulse, or a large, urgent, and deep Liver pulse, both indicate hernia. A beating, slippery, and urgent Heart pulse indicates Heart Hernia. A deep and pounding Lung pulse indicates Lung Hernia. Urgency in the Three Yang pulses indicates Jia masses; urgency in the Three Yin pulses indicates hernia.
The *Wu Zang Sheng Cheng Pian* (Chapter on Generation of the Five Organs) states: When the Green (Liver) pulse arrives, long and pulsating left and right, with accumulated Qi supporting below the heart, it is named Gan Bi (Liver Impediment), caused by cold-dampness, treated similarly to hernia. When the Yellow (Spleen) pulse arrives, large and deficient, with accumulated Qi in the abdomen and rebellious Qi, it is named Jue Shan (Rebellious Hernia); this applies equally to women.
The *Si Shi Ni Cong Lun* (Treatise on Reversal and Accordance in Four Seasons) states: A slippery Jueyin pulse indicates Hu Feng Shan (Fox Wind Hernia). A slippery Shaoyin pulse indicates Fei Feng Shan (Lung Wind Hernia). A slippery Taiyin pulse indicates Pi Feng Shan (Spleen Wind Hernia). A slippery Yangming pulse indicates Xin Feng Shan (Heart Wind Hernia). A slippery Taiyang pulse indicates Shen Feng Shan (Kidney Wind Hernia). A slippery Shaoyang pulse indicates Gan Feng Shan (Liver Wind Hernia).
The *Zhi Zhen Yao Da Lun* (Treatise on the Most Essential and Greatest Principles) states: When Yangming governs the year, men suffer from hernia and women from lower abdominal pain. When Yangming is victorious/excessive, external hernia erupts. When Taiyang is in the spring position, people suffer from lower abdominal pain pulling to the testis, connecting to the lumbar spine, and rushing upward to cause heart pain. When Taiyang has a returning qi, there is lower abdominal pain pulling to the testis, connecting to the lumbar spine, and rushing upward to the heart. When Taiyin is in the spring position, if the dominant qi is excessive, severe cases result in hernia.
