Common name: Houjiang (Monkey Ginger).
Bitter, warm in nature, non-toxic. Use after baking with honey water.
[Invention/Commentary]
Gusuibu (Drynaria Rhizome) is a herb of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian. It can treat shattered bone injuries, hence its name. It primarily treats poison gas in bones (external pathogens invading bones), wind-pathogen, tinnitus, toothache, and bone pain; it has the effects of breaking blood stasis and stopping bleeding, as well as treating fractures and knitting bones together. It is also used to treat chronic diarrhea due to Kidney deficiency; grind it into powder, stuff it into a pig kidney, roast until cooked, and eat it. Dai Yuanli treated bone atrophy following dysentery by adding four jin of Tiger Bone (Gujiu) to make pills, which was effective. However, its nature is descending and astringent, so it should not be used concurrently with wind-drying herbs.
Shiwei (Pyrrosia Leaf):
Bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic. When used, remove the yellow hairs; otherwise, they will irritate the lungs causing persistent coughing. Remove the stems and use after slight roasting.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats labor-induced heat and pathogenic qi, five types of strangury (difficulty in urination) with blockage, and promotes free flow of the urinary pathway.
[Invention/Commentary]
Shiwei spreads over rocks, growing leaves like leather. Its taste is cold and diuretic. Therefore, *Shennong Bencao Jing*'s treatment of "labor-induced heat and pathogenic qi" refers to the heat pathogen caused by excessive labor damaging body fluids and leading to strangury and blockage, not referring to consumptive disease (Xu Lao). For treating "Zhuanbao" (bladder compression during pregnancy causing urinary retention), decoct it together with Cheqiancao (Plantago Seed/Herb).
Shenhuo Cao (Fire Prevention Grass):
Also known as Shenhuo Cao, common name Huodan Cao.
Bitter, cold, non-toxic.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats severe fire-heat sores, body fever, and various evil qi.
[Invention/Commentary]
Shenhuo Cao has the properties of cooling blood and detoxifying, thus *Shennong Bencao Jing* uses it for severe fire-heat sores. *Rihuazi Bencao* treats mania from heat, red eyes, headache, alternating chills and fever, wandering wind (migratory urticaria), and leukorrhea in women. In *Qianjin Fang*, Shenhuo San uses this herb as the sovereign drug, specifically treating metrorrhagia and leukorrhea due to blood heat; crush and extract juice for external application. It is effective externally for infant erysipelas with fever and wandering wind heat sores. Do not administer for any diseases caused by cold-dampness where the patient fears cold and prefers warmth.
Tianhuxu (Hydrocotyle Sibthorpioides):
Identical to Tianhuxu, common name Ebusicao (Goat's Refusal Grass), also known as Jichangcao.
Acrid, warm, non-toxic. Its juice can neutralize the toxicity of Arsenic Trioxide (Pishi) and Realgar (Xionghuang).
[Invention/Commentary]
Ebusicao has a warm and ascending nature, and an acrid and dispersing flavor, thus it can penetrate to the vertex of the head. People only know that insufflating it into the nose clears congestion and causes polyps to fall off, but do not know that its efficacy in treating headaches is most rapid, and its ability to remove nebulae (ocular opacities) is even more miraculous. Insufflating it into the nose causes the nebula to fall naturally. Therefore, Biyun San uses it to induce sneezing, thereby venting turbid qi and removing the nebula. This is analogous to the ancient metaphor of "opening the pot lid" to release steam.
