[Di Zhen]
Also known as Di Zhen.
Bitter, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
Invention: Di Zhen grows mostly in the cracks of bricks in courtyards. Its stems are red, leaves are green, and its foliage is lush like brocade, hence the name. It can unblock and circulate blood vessels, treating metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) and dysentery with bloody stools. Its efficacy specializes in dispersing stasis, stopping bleeding, and promoting urination. It is used in formulas for strangury (lin syndrome) in *Qian Jin Fang*.
[Zhi Li]
Sweet, warm in nature, non-toxic. Those growing on stones at the bottom of water bodies, fluffy like hair, are called Zhi Li.
Invention: Zhi Li and aquatic moss both grow in water, but those floating on the surface are called aquatic moss. In *Qian Jin Fang*, there is a formula named Zhi Li Wan, which is the primary formula for treating dysentery characterized by heat in the hypochondrium leading to diarrhea, vomiting and regurgitation, and vomiting after consuming warm food. *Ri Hua Ben Cao* records that crushing it into juice treats heart oppression caused by epidemic febrile diseases. *Ming Yi Bie Lu* states it treats severe cold in the heart and abdomen, warms the middle jiao, aids digestion, strengthens stomach qi, and stops diarrhea and dysentery, all due to its warm nature ability to promote diuresis.
[Shi Rui]
Also known as Meng Ding Cha.
Sweet, warm in nature, non-toxic. Grows on the stone surfaces and dead trunks of Mount Meng, indistinguishable from wood ear mushrooms.
Invention: Shi Rui brightens the eyes, benefits essence and qi, moistens the throat, clears heat, and resolves phlegm; when combined with fresh ginger, it can relieve pain in the forehead and supraorbital region caused by Yangming channel pathology, based on the principle that what belongs to heaven tends to rise (affecting the upper body).
[Juan Bai]
Pungent, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Tong Jun and Lei Gong stated: Sweet, cold in nature, non-toxic. Boil in salt water for half a day, then boil in well water for another half day. Raw use breaks blood; roasted use stops bleeding.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* states it treats evil qi in the five zang organs, cold-heat pain in the female genitalia, mass formations (zheng jia), amenorrhea due to blood obstruction, and infertility. Long-term consumption makes the body light and complexion harmonious.
Invention: Juan Bai is a herb entering the blood aspect of the Foot Jueyin Liver Channel. Examining the various treatments in *Ben Cao Jing*, they all pertain to menstrual disorders in women, generally relating to pathologies of the Jueyin and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). Formulas such as Da Ze Lan Wan, Zi Shi Ying Wan, and Tian Men Dong Wan in *Qian Jin Fang* all use it. *Jing Shu* states it is contraindicated in pregnancy because its cold nature can damage the blood and qi within the uterus.
[Ma Bo]
Pungent, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It grows mostly in damp, decaying areas of bamboo groves, formed through decomposition and swelling. When used, spread out raw cloth, rub the Ma Bo on top, and collect the powder underneath with a plate.
Invention: Ma Bo is light, void, and floats upward; its power can disperse evil heat in the lungs. Therefore, it treats cough, bi-syndrome of the throat (sore throat/swelling), epistaxis, and aphonia. Li Dongyuan used it in Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin to treat Dato Bing (Big Head Plague) with difficulty in the throat. However, it must be mixed with raw honey, dispersed in water so it does not float, before decoction and administration.
