(Zhongpin, Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing)
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats heat due to deficiency-labor (lao re) and pathogenic factors; five types of long bi (obstruction of urination); promotes the free flow of the urinary pathway.
[Verification] It is said: Shitai (Pyrrosiae Folium) grows in the valleys of Huayin. Currently, it is also found in Jinzhou, Jiangzhou, Chuzhou, Haizhou, Fuzhou, and Jiangning. It grows in clusters beside rocks, as well as in shady cliffs and dangerous crevices, specifically in places where no sound of water or human voices can be heard. It does not wither in winter. The leaves are nearly one chi long and about one cun wide, with yellow hairs on the back, possessing a tough texture with spots resembling leather. One variety with golden star-like spots on the back of the leaf is called Jinxingcao (Venus Grass); another variety with leaves resembling apricot leaves is called Xingye Wei. Both grow on rocks and have similar efficacy. For processing, the yellow hairs must be removed extremely thoroughly; otherwise, they will irritate the lungs, causing cough and rebellious qi that is difficult to treat. Huashi (Talcum), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) serve as its guiding herbs (shi). It works well when combined with Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma). It can be used to mitigate the toxicity of Zhusha (Cinnabaris) and Fanshi (Aluminis Crystallization).
[Commentary] It is said: "Shi" (stone) represents the bone of the mountain, while "Wei" (leather/hide) represents its skin. It embodies the function of Kan (Water) yang and attaches to the body of Li (Fire). From a state of hardness, coagulation, closure, and density, it achieves smoothness, penetration, and distribution. Therefore, it treats heat from deficiency-labor and pathogenic factors causing five types of long bi. By borrowing the swift and fierce nature of stone, it unblocks the urinary pathways, acting as swiftly as an echo responds to a sound or a shadow follows a form. Those with golden stars are called Jinxingcao. In Jiazhou, it is used to treat carbuncles on the back. This is likely because the back belongs to yang; for carbuncles on the back that cannot be stopped, Jinxingcao functions through mutual correspondence between upper and lower, moving when appropriate and stopping when appropriate. To resolve the yang toxicity from cinnabar and minerals, it employs the stillness and tranquility of Gen (Mountain) for counter-treatment. To promote abundant hair growth: the Kidney governs bones and marrow, and hair is the flourishing aspect of the Kidney; the Lung governs skin and flesh, and body hair is the flourishing aspect of the Lung.
(Zhongpin, Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing)
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, warm in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats hernia and masses (zhen jia) in women, cold and painful swelling in the yin region, abdominal urgency and pain, dispels wind-induced headache, promotes skin and muscle growth, and enhances complexion.
[Verification] It is said: It originates from Xichuan, as well as Hedong, Yanzhou, Hangzhou, and other places, mostly growing in mountains. The seedlings and leaves resemble Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and are slightly thinner than Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma).
[Commentary] "Ben" is a fragrant herb. It is the root of restoring a haggard appearance, thus enhancing complexion and promoting skin/muscle growth, consistent with the efficacy of Bai Zhi. It disseminates hidden yin, clarifies spirit and form, and purifies and organizes to generate life. Just as when yang qi is above, turbid qi and blood lead to wind headaches; when yin qi is below, turbid blood and qi lead to hernia, cold painful swelling in the yin, and abdominal urgency—all these can be purified and regulated by "Ben".
(The clarity of spirit and beauty of form—do they not stem from the root of "Ben"? Generally, the haggardness of form and color arises because yin fails to nourish the exterior with yang, and yang loses its hold within the interior.)
