Category of Aromatic Woods (Platycladi Cacumen)
Benefits the Heart and Spleen, nourishes the Liver and Kidneys.
Pungent, sweet, and neutral in nature. The aromatic fragrance can penetrate the Heart and Spleen. (Most herbs that tonify the Spleen are drying; only this herb's fragrance soothes the Spleen while tending toward moistening, making it excellent for concurrent use among spleen-assisting herbs.) Its nature is moistening, capable of nourishing the Liver and Kidneys. (Li Haogu stated: It is a herb acting on the Qi level of the Liver channel.) Enhances wisdom and calms the spirit, improves hearing and vision. (Aroma opens orifices.) Nourishes blood and stops sweating. (The Heart generates blood; sweat is the fluid of the Heart.) Expels wind-dampness, cures convulsions and epilepsy, moisturizes the skin, wards off malevolent influences. Rich in oil and slippery; contraindicated for those with diarrhea, and also to be avoided by those with excessive phlegm. Processed by steaming, sun-drying, stir-frying, and grinding to remove oil. Do not use if the oil has penetrated through. Incompatible with Chrysanthemum Flos. (Jide Hall prescription: For treating yellow-water damp sores, use genuine bitumen and sesame oil, two taels each, boiled until thick, applied externally with miraculous effect.)
Cools blood, clears damp-heat from the Blood level.
Bitter, slightly cold in nature. Astringent and dry. (Acquiring the dry metal energy from facing west.) Most effective at clearing damp-heat from the Blood level. Stops hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, stranguria. Treats intestinal wind bleeding, hematuria, bloody dysentery. Indicated for all types of bleeding disorders. Expels wind-dampness causing various bi-syndromes, and lizhi joint pain. (Severe pain in limbs and joints, quiet during the day and worse at night, known as White Tiger Lizhi Wind, also caused by wind-cold-dampness.) Applied externally for burns and scalds. (Mashed and mixed with water for application.) Promotes tissue regeneration, kills parasites. Roasted and applied for frostbite. Juice darkens beard and hair. Zhu Danxi considered it an essential herb for nourishing Yin. However, it ultimately belongs to bitter-cold, drying, and astringent substances. It is suitable only for clearing when there is damp-heat in the Blood level. If there is true Yin deficiency, it is not appropriate. There are several species of cypress; the authentic one is named Qiantou Bai (Thousand-Head Cypress) or Foshou Bai (Buddha's Hand Cypress), characterized by several branches emerging densely from the root. Use either stir-fried or raw. Use Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) and Concha Ostreae (Muli) as guiding herbs. Adversely reacts with Chrysanthemum Flos. Suitable with wine. (For hair loss, grind into powder, mix with sesame oil, and apply.)
Pinus Resin (Songzhi)
Also known as Pine Rosin or Asphalt, dries dampness and expels wind.
Bitter, sweet, warm, and drying. Expels wind and removes dampness, transforms toxicity, promotes tissue regeneration, and relieves pain. Boiled into paste for topical application. Treats metrorrhagia, severe bi-syndromes, and toothache. Ground into powder for chewing. (For carious teeth with holes, insert pine resin, and the worm will exit the tooth.) Generated by absorbing Taiyang Qi. Drying nature removes dampness; sweet flavor eliminates heat, hence widely used in external medicine. Warm and drying in nature; contraindicated for blood deficiency. Boil in water until boiling vigorously a hundred times until white and smooth before use. (Shenghui Fang: For infant tight lips, roast pine resin until melted and apply.)
Pinus Node (Songjie) [Dries dampness and expels wind]
Bitter, warm, and drying. Treats wind-dampness in bone joints. (Zhu Danxi said: Can dry dampness within the blood.) More drying than pine resin; especially contraindicated for blood deficiency. Best crushed and soaked in wine.
Pine Needle (Songmao) [Expels wind and promotes hair growth]
Bitter, warm. Can promote hair growth. Suitable for applying to frostbite and various wind-damp sores. Contraindications same as pine resin. Cut finely for use. (Jianbian Fang: For scrotal damp itching, decoct pine needles and wash frequently.)
Pine Flower (Songhua) [Moistening, tonifies Qi, expels wind]
Sweet, warm. Moistens Heart and Lungs, tonifies Qi, stops bleeding, expels wind. Can also be used to brew wine. (Must be harvested promptly; cannot be stored long. Nowadays, people mix it with white rock sugar and stamp it into cakes, which is quite good.) Excellent for sprinkling on various smallpox sores and injuries, as well as wet, non-scabbing lesions. Excessive consumption induces upper jiao heat diseases.
