Tonifies the Middle Jiao and boosts Qi.
Sweet and neutral in nature. Harmonizes the Middle Jiao, stimulates appetite, augments physical strength, solidifies the intestines and stomach, prevents hunger, and promotes vigorous walking. However, it becomes rancid easily if stored for a long time. The above belongs to the category of mountain fruits.
Disperses cold and dampness.
Sweet, astringent, and warm in nature. Disperses stagnant Qi, repels cold pathogens, treats epigastric pain, and treats blood-Qi stagnation pain in women. (Calcine five qian of [Olive], mix with one liang of Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), grind into powder, take two qian per dose, swallow with salt water or rice decoction; named Juantong San. Taking it alone, also effective with vinegar water.) Its fruit has double knots, and its pit resembles the testicles (the external kidneys). Therefore, it treats hernia and scrotal swelling, embodying the principle of "taking analogy by form." (Calcine, mix with wine and take; add Foeniculum Vulgare (Huixiang) and Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium (Qingpi), stir-fry and grind into powder, take with wine, also good.) Do not take if there is no cold-dampness or stagnant Qi. Calcine. Lychee is sweet, sour, and hot. Relieves thirst and irritability, stops hiccups. (Take seven Lychees, calcine with peel and pit. Excessive consumption causes fever, thirst, swollen gums, and epistaxis. Especially contraindicated for patients with dental diseases and fire-pathogen conditions. The shell induces chickenpox but also resolves Lychee heat. (Excessive consumption of raw Lychee causes drunkenness-like symptoms; soaking the shell in water resolves this, which follows the principle of "using the original substance to resolve indigestion caused by that substance.") Flowers, peel, and roots treat throat obstruction with swelling and pain; boil juice and gargle/swallow.
Commonly known as Longan. Tonifies Heart and Spleen.
Sweet, neutral, and moistening. Tonifies the Heart, enhances wisdom (also named Yizhi). Pleases the Stomach, nourishes the Spleen. Treats forgetfulness and palpitations. Calms the Spirit and promotes deep sleep. For all cases of excessive mental exertion, exhausting Heart and Spleen, and various syndromes where Blood fails to return to the Spleen. (In Guipi Tang, Longan Aril is used as a guiding herb because among the five flavors, Sweet flavor first enters the Spleen. In cases where Heart and Spleen are damaged leading to Blood depletion, causing forgetfulness, palpitations, fright, hematemesis, metrorrhagia, intestinal wind bleeding, etc., Guipi Tang can guide Blood back to the Spleen to generate and tonify it. Taoists chew Longan Aril finely, wait for saliva to be generated, mix with saliva and swallow slowly; this is the method of taking Yuquan.)
Clears Lung heat.
Sweet, astringent, sour, and neutral in nature. Clears the Lung, opens the Stomach, directs Qi downward, relieves irritability, generates fluids, resolves alcohol toxicity, benefits the throat. Resolves various toxins, including Pufferfish toxin. (Add to boiling water, excellent.) Also for fish bone impaction. Boil juice. The pit's main indications are the same as Olive. (To resolve Pufferfish toxin and treat various fish bone impactions, if Olive is unavailable, use Olive pit ground into juice, equally effective.) The kernel is sweet, neutral, and moistening. Treats dryness and pain of the lips and mouth; grind and apply externally. (For swelling due to Kidney Yin deficiency, use equal parts of Olive pit, Lychee pit, and Hawthorn pit, calcine, grind into powder, take two qian per dose, mix with Fennel decoction on an empty stomach.)
