Tonifies the Mingmen (Gate of Life), benefits the Sanjiao (Triple Burner).
Taste is sweet, nature is hot. The kernel is moistening, the skin is astringent. (The skin gathers Lung Qi and stabilizes asthma, secures the Kidney and astringes essence; it is rarely used in modern prescriptions, but if used, its efficacy would surpass that of Rosa laevigata fruit [Jinyingzi] and Lotus stamen [Lianxu].)
Unblocks the Mingmen, benefits the Sanjiao, moistens the intestines and stomach, beautifies the skin and muscles, warms the Lungs and tonifies the Kidneys, treats flaccidity syndromes (Wei syndrome) and strengthens sexual function, assists Psoralea corylifolia (Pogu Zhi). Walnut belongs to Wood, and Psoralea corylifolia belongs to Fire; their combination possesses the subtle effect of Wood generating Fire. Ancients said: "If Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) lacks Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhimu), or Psoralea corylifolia (Pogu Zhi) lacks Walnut, it is like the water jellyfish lacking shrimp." Li Shizhen said: "The Sanjiao is the special envoy of Yuan Qi (Original Qi); the Mingmen is the root source of the Sanjiao. 'Mingmen' refers to the residence organ, which stores essence and connects to the uterus; 'Sanjiao' is named after its functional regions, serving as the manager of intake, output, and digestion. One is Substance (Ti), the other is Function (Yong). Its substance is neither fat nor flesh; it lies between the two Kidneys, attaches to the spine, connects downward to both Kidneys, upward to the Heart and Lungs, and penetrates the brain. It is the origin of life, the master of Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo), and the mansion of Essence and Qi. All humans and animals possess it; human reproduction and the generation of all things proceed from here. This corresponds to what the *Neijing* states: 'Beside the seventh vertebra, there is the 'Xiao Xin' (Careful Mind/Heart).' The *Nanjing* erroneously identified the right Kidney as the Mingmen. Gao Yangsheng propagated this error by compiling the *Mai Jue* (Pulse Classic). It was not until Zhu Gong, Chen Yan, and Dai Qizong that this was refuted. The Kidney and Mingmen are interconnected; they store Essence and abhor dryness. The walnut resembles the state of the Mingmen; its juice is green-black, thus entering the North (Kidney meridian). Assisting Pogu Zhi, it moistens dryness and regulates blood, causing Essence and Qi to fill internally and blood vessels to flow smoothly, thereby eliminating various symptoms."
Because the Sanjiao is unblocked and smooth, it treats upper-level deficiency-cold wheezing and coughing. (Hong Mai suffered from phlegm disease. In his later years, when responding to imperial inquiries, the Emperor decreed he chew three walnuts and three slices of ginger before bed, then drink some soup, and repeat chewing the walnut and ginger as before. Quietly lying down would ensure recovery. Hong Mai followed these instructions; by morning, the phlegm dissipated and cough stopped. When Hong Mai edited his works, he recorded that his young son suffered from phlegm-wheezing illness and dreamed of Guanyin, who instructed him to take Ginseng and Walnut Decoction [Renshen Hutang Tang]. After taking it, he recovered. The next day, the walnut skin was removed, and the wheezing recurred. Using the walnut with the skin again led to recovery within two nights, likely because the skin can gather Lung Qi. Crushed together with scallion white, ginger, and tea and decocted, it induces sweating and disperses cold.) Lower-level deficiency-pain in the waist and feet. Internal pain in the heart and abdomen. External sores, swellings, and various toxins. All can be eliminated.
However, it moves Wind and generates Phlegm, and aids Kidney Fire. Those with Phlegm-Heat in the Lungs or blazing Fire in the Mingmen should not consume it. Removing the skin moistens dryness and nourishes Blood; using it with the skin provides astringency. Walnuts that are oily are toxic, thus capable of killing parasites and treating sores. The green skin outside the shell, when pressed for oil, darkens beard and hair.
