涩味，能燥湿化痰。
（绿矾）味道酸、咸且性寒。性质涩而具有收敛作用。能燥湿并促使涎液排出，化解痰浊，降低体内浑浊之物。具有解毒功效，能祛除风邪、杀灭虫类。能止血并缓解疼痛，通利大、小便。
（白矾）能腐蚀恶肉，促进新肉生长，清除骨髓中顽固的热邪。（骨髓被热邪劫夺则空虚，因此导致骨痿和牙齿浮动。）治疗惊痫、黄疸、血痛、喉痹、齿痛、风眼、鼻中息肉、崩漏带下、脱肛、阴蚀及阴挺。（阴部肌肉挺出，是肝经火旺所致。）治疗疔疮、肿毒、痈疽、瘰疬、疮癣以及虎、犬、蛇、虫咬伤。（李迅说：凡是发背疮，应当服用蜡矾丸以保护膜原，防止毒瓦斯内攻入里。用白矾一两、黄蜡七钱，熔化混合制成丸药，每次服用十丸，逐渐增加至二十丸，每日服用一百丸则药效有力。此药保护膜原、托毒外出、解毒化脓的功效很大。李时珍说：白矾能吐出风热痰涎，取其酸苦涌泄的特性；治疗各种血痛、阴挺、脱肛、疮疡，取其酸涩收敛的特性；治疗风眼、痰饮、泄泻痢疾、崩漏带下，取其收敛和燥湿的特性；治疗喉痹、痈蛊、蛇伤，取其解毒的特性。用白矾与芽茶捣成粉末，冷水送服，可解一切毒。）多服用会损伤心肺，伤害骨骼。（苏颂说：因为能排斥水，所以写在纸上，水不能浸湿它，由此知道它的性质是排斥水的。）选取洁白光莹的白矾使用。生用可以解毒，煅用可以生肌。另一种方法：将火加热地面，在上面洒水，取白矾铺在地面上，用盘子盖住，四周用灰围拥，经过一天一夜，白矾升华飞集到盘子上，扫下收集起来，称为“矾精”。未升华完的剩余部分，再……

Astringent, dries dampness and transforms phlegm.
Acidic, salty, and cold in nature. Its property is astringent and contracting. It dries dampness and expels saliva, resolves phlegm and turbidity, detoxifies, dispels wind, and kills parasites. It stops bleeding and relieves pain, unblocks the large and small intestines/bladder.
[White Alum] Erodes foul flesh, generates good flesh, and clears stubborn heat from the bone marrow. (When the marrow is depleted by heat, it becomes empty, leading to bone flaccidity and floating teeth.) Treats fright epilepsy, jaundice, blood pain, throat obstruction, toothache, wind-eye, nasal polyps, uterine bleeding and leukorrhea, rectal prolapse, vaginal erosion, and vaginal prolapse. (Vaginal tissue protruding is due to fire in the Liver channel.) Treats carbuncles, sores, ulcers, scrofula, skin diseases, and bites from tigers, dogs, snakes, and insects. (Li Xun said: For any back carbuncle, one should take Wax Alum Pills to protect the membrane and prevent toxic vapors from attacking inward. Use 1 liang of White Alum and 7 qian of yellow wax, melt and mix into pills. Take 10 pills per dose, gradually increasing to 20 pills. Taking 100 pills daily makes the effect potent. This medicine greatly protects the membrane, pushes out toxins, detoxifies, and resolves pus. Li Shizhen said: It can induce vomiting of wind-heat phlegm-saliva, utilizing its sour-bitter purgative nature; treating various blood pains, vaginal prolapse, rectal prolapse, and sores/ulcers, utilizing its sour-astringent contracting nature; treating wind-eye, phlegm-fluids, diarrhea-dysentery, and bleeding-leukorrhea, utilizing its contracting and drying-dampness nature; treating throat obstruction, abdominal worms, and snakebites, utilizing its detoxifying nature. Crushing White Alum and bud tea into powder and taking with cold water solves all poisons.) Overconsumption damages the heart and lungs and injures the bones. (Su Song said: Because it repels water, writing on paper shows that water cannot wet it, thus knowing its nature repels water.) Select those that are white, bright, and lustrous for use. Raw use detoxifies; calcined use generates flesh. Another method: Heat the ground with fire, sprinkle water on it, spread alum on the ground, cover with a plate, surround with ash on four sides. [Green Vitriol] Sour, purging, cooling, dispersing, astringent, contracting. Dries dampness and transforms phlegm, detoxifies and kills parasites, promotes urination, and reduces food stagnation. (Used with spleen-strengthening herbs.) Disperses throat obstruction. (Mixed with vinegar and swallowed as juice. Li Shizhen said: Many formulas for distension, yellow swelling, malaria, and dysentery use it extensively. Its origin changes from Zhang Zhongjing's formula using Alum Stone and Niter to treat female-labor jaundice.) Main indications are slightly similar to White Alum. Also known as Soap Alum. (Named so because it can dye black.) Deep green, bright, and clean ones are superior. Red-colored ones are called Crimson Alum. It enters the Blood level, subdues Liver Wood, and dries Spleen dampness. (Zhang Sanfeng's Immortal Transmission Formula records the Subdue Wood Pill: 2 jin of Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, soaked in rice wash water; 4 liang of Yellow Rice Wine and Yeast, stir-fried; add 1 jin of Crimson Alum, mixed with vinegar, dried, placed in a bottle, calcined over fire into powder, mixed with vinegar into pills, taken with wine. Treats Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth causing epigastric fullness, or yellow swelling like earth color.)
