Xuan, breaks qi stagnation, resolves phlegm, and aids digestion.
Pungent, sweet, and neutral in nature. Raw consumption raises qi, while cooked consumption descends qi. It broadens the middle jiao to aid digestion, resolves phlegm, and disperses blood stasis. It treats hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), cough, and acid regurgitation. It promotes the free flow of urination and defecation. It detoxifies alcohol.
It neutralizes the toxicity of wheat flour products and resolves accumulation from tofu. (Tofu curd becomes difficult to coagulate when radish is present.) Crushed raw radish applied topically treats traumatic injuries, scalds, and burns. It treats aphagic dysentery (dysentery with inability to eat). It consumes qi and penetrates blood, whitening beard and hair. (Those taking Polygonum multiflorum and Rehmannia root should especially avoid it; ginger can counteract its toxicity.) Radish greens are pungent, bitter, and warm. Their functions are slightly similar but they are also very draining and reducing.
Xuan, dispels cold and releases the exterior, opens phlegm obstruction, and stops vomiting.
Pungent and warm. It circulates through the yang divisions to dispel cold and release the exterior. It diffuses lung qi to relieve depression and harmonize the middle jiao. It opens the stomach appetite, resolves phlegm, and facilitates food intake. It treats headache due to Cold Damage (Shanghan) and nasal congestion due to Wind-Cold invasion. (Pungency enters the Lung meridian.) It treats coughing, upward reversal, vomiting, and hiccups. (Vomiting involves sound and matter; hiccups involve sound without matter; spitting involves matter without sound. These conditions may arise from cold, heat, food retention, or phlegm, causing qi to reverse and rush upward. Ginger can disperse reversing qi and is considered the holy medicine for vomiting.) It treats chest fullness and phlegm obstruction, cold pain, and damp diarrhea. It eliminates water qi, moves blood stasis, removes foul odors, and kills the toxicity of Pinellia ternata, Arisaema erubescens, mushrooms, and wild game poison. (Wild game often consume Pinellia ternata, hence their toxicity; ginger can resolve this.) It wards off miasma from fog, dew, mountain vapors, and pestilential air. (Hold in mouth when walking early in the morning.) Leaves: eating them causes abdominal masses. Crushed juice drunk immediately dissolves them.
Run, opens phlegm obstruction.
Pungent, warm, and moistening. It treats dysphagia and regurgitation. (Used interchangeably or combined with leek juice, pear juice, bamboo sap, child's urine, human milk, honey, donkey urine, arrowroot juice, cane syrup, and lotus root juice, adjusted according to circumstances.) It rescues sudden collapse. (For conditions such as wind stroke, qi strike, heat stroke, evil qi invasion, and sudden collapse, drinking ginger juice mixed with child's urine is effective; ginger juice opens phlegm, and child's urine descends fire.) It treats axillary osmidrosis (fox odor). (Apply frequently.) It treats frostbitten ears. (Boil into ointment and apply.) It adheres to rheumatic bi-syndrome pain. (Boil with Huangming Jiao [collagen from black ox hide]).
