Qingzhi (Blue Paper) is indicated for du jing chuang (venereal sores caused by jealousy/infidelity). It should be applied with saliva and left for several days to heal, while also protecting the painful area; the longer it is stored, the better. It contains Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), which has insecticidal and detoxifying properties (Bencao Gangmu / Compendium of Materia Medica).
Tongyou Sanzhi (Tung Oil Umbrella Paper) is indicated for zhu gan yin chuang (ulcers on dry wood or genital areas due to worm-like erosion). Burn it to ash, eliminate its fire toxicity, apply it overnight, and a scab will form (Bencao Gangmu / Compendium of Materia Medica). [Combined Treatment] (According to Yifang Jingjie / Quick Guide to Medical Formulas): To induce sweating in Ding chuang (carbuncles/furuncles), use Qian Nian Duan Shi (Calcined Stone from a Thousand Years) stir-fried for 10 parts and Jiu Hei Sanzhi (Old Black Umbrella Paper) burnt to ash for 1 part. Take one small spoonful each time. First add a little vinegar water, then pour in a little sesame oil, mix well with the powder, and take with one cup of boiling water. Cover with a thick quilt; after one shichen (two hours), profuse sweating will occur.
Liri (Almanac/Calendar) is indicated for xie nue (stubborn malaria that does not cease) (Bencao Gangmu / Compendium of Materia Medica). [Name] (Li Shizhen says): Taihao was the first to create almanacs, as recorded in books (see Liji / Book of Rites), where the Son of Heaven issued the new moon calendar to feudal lords in the twelfth month. [Treatment] (According to Weisheng Yijian Fang / Simple Formula for Health Preservation): For treating xie nue, use a complete almanac from the previous year, burn it to ash at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), make pills with paste the size of wutong seeds. On the day of severe发作 (attack), take 50 pills early in the morning delivered with Wugen Shui (water without roots/source, e.g., dew or rainwater).
Zhong Kui is indicated for repelling evil and stopping malaria (Bencao Gangmu / Compendium of Materia Medica). [Origin] (According to Yishi / Records of Anecdotes): During the reign of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Zhong Kui failed the imperial examination and struck his head against a step to death. Later, Emperor Minghuang dreamed of a little ghost stealing a jade flute, and a great ghost wearing a torn hat and blue robe catching and eating the little ghost. The Emperor asked who he was, and he replied: "I am Zhong Kui, a Jinshi from Zhongnan Mountain. Having been granted robes and belts for my burial, I vowed to eradicate all wasting ghosts in the world." Thus, Emperor Minghuang ordered Wu Daozi to paint his image and spread it throughout the world. [Treatment] (According to Yangqi Jianbian Fang / Convenient Formulas by Yang Qi): For treating difficult childbirth in women, burn the left foot of Zhong Kui to ash and take with water. [Combined Treatment] (According to Shengji Lu / Record of Holy Relief): For treating gui nue (ghost malaria characterized by coming and going unpredictably), burn paper painted with Zhong Kui to ash (2 qian), along with Awei (Asafoetida), Pishuang (Arsenic Trioxide), and Dansha (Cinnabar), each the size of a soap bean. Grind into fine powder, mix with Han Shi Mian (Han Dynasty-style dough/flour), and make pills the size of small beans. Take one pill when symptoms appear, delivered with cold water. Preparation should be done on the 15th day of the first lunar month and the 5th day of the fifth lunar month. [Refutation of Error] (Li Shizhen says): According to Erya, "Zhongkui" is the name for a type of mushroom (Kao Gong Ji Zhu / Commentary on the Artificers' Record states that "Zhongkui" is the name for a mallet). Mushrooms resemble mallets, and mallets resemble mushrooms, hence they share the same name. In popular depictions, deities hold a mallet to strike ghosts, thus also named "Zhongkui". Enthusiasts later created the legend of Zhong Kui, claiming he was an unsuccessed Jinshi who could eat ghosts, turning it into a story. This is unknown to be an error.
