Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu), originally growing in the river valleys of Shanggu and Yuanju, is now available everywhere, particularly abundant in Jiangzhe and Shu-Han regions. The shrub grows over one zhang high, with greenish-blue bark; leaves resemble those of Toona sinensis (Chun tree) but are broader and denser, appearing purple; flowers bloom in March, reddish-purple in color; fruits mature in July and August, resembling peppercorns, pale yellow when tender, turning deep purple upon full maturity. Harvested on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, dried in the shade. *Fengtu Ji* records: "Customs esteem the ninth day of the ninth month as 'Shangjiu'; by this date, Evodiae Fructus has a strong aroma, ripe appearance, and red color. Its calyxes can be picked and inserted into hair to ward off evil qi and resist winter cold." Additionally, *Xu Qi Xiang Ji* states: Huan Jing from Runan studied under Fei Changfang. Fei Changfang told him, "On the ninth day of the ninth month, your household will face disaster. You should urgently leave home, each making a crimson pouch filled with Evodiae Fructus to tie around the arms, ascend high places, drink chrysanthemum wine, and this misfortune can be avoided." Huan Jing followed this advice, leading his entire family up a high mountain. Upon returning in the evening, they found that chickens, dogs, cattle, and sheep had suddenly died at once. Hearing this, Fei Changfang said, "These animals have taken the disaster upon themselves." Thus, people every year on this day ascend high places to drink wine and wear Evodiae pouches, originating from this event. It is commonly believed that Evodiae Fructus has an ascending nature, meaning it rushes upward to the chest and diaphragm, so it is not considered suitable for dietary tonic use. Zhang Zhongjing treated vomiting accompanied by chest fullness using Evodia Decoction (Zhuyu Tang). The prescription consists of Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) 1 sheng, Ziziphus Jujuba Fruit (Dazao) 20 pieces, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) 1 da liang, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) 1 liang. Boil these in 5 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Take 7 he per dose, three times daily. For dry retching, spitting of saliva, and headache, this formula is also indicated. Furthermore, branches growing southward treat sudden obstruction of urination and defecation (Guan Ge). Take a piece broken to the length of the middle joint of the second finger of the hand, hold it in the mouth, and relief follows immediately; this comes from Yao Sengyuan's formula. The root is also used medicinally. *Shanfan Fang* treats Spleen Labor Heat with white worms in the spleen, causing frequent vomiting. Take Evodiae Fructus roots growing eastward, large ones one chi long, Cannabis Fructus (Damaizi) 8 sheng, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi) 2 liang. These three ingredients are crushed, soaked in one dou of wine overnight, kept warm over low fire for three cycles, strained to remove dregs, and taken one sheng on an empty stomach at dawn until finished. The worms will then be expelled, either dead, half-rotten, or excreted as yellow fluid. Regarding all medicinal preparation methods, silence is prohibited; do not speak about preparing medicine, otherwise the efficacy regarding worm expulsion will not manifest.
