Huaihua (Sophorae Flos), for detailed content, please refer to the entry under Huai Shi (Sophorae Fructus).
Chushi (Broussonetiae Fructus) grows in Mount Shaoshi and is now available everywhere. There are two types here: one type has spotted patterns on its bark, called "Banggu" (Spotted Gu), which people currently use to make hats; the other type has no floral patterns on its bark, and its branches and leaves are very similar to the former. It is best to select those whose leaves resemble grape leaves, being lobed and bearing fruit. Its fruits form in early summer, about the size of a pellet, greenish-yellow, gradually turning deep red in June and July, at which point they mature. They are harvested in August and September, soaked in water, peeled, pith removed, and the inner seeds taken out, then dried in the sun. Immortal prescriptions include methods for taking only the fruit alone. When the fruit is bright red, collect the inner seeds, dry them in the shade, sieve into powder, and take with water, two qianbi (a traditional unit of measure), the longer the duration of use, the better it is, commonly known as "Gu". Another theory states that abandoned fields will inevitably grow Gou trees. Leaves with lobes are called Chu, without lobes are called Gou. The *Book of Songs · Minor Odes* says: "There stands a tall elm, beneath it only gu trees." Lu Ji's commentary states: In Youzhou, it is called Gusang or Chusang; in Jing, Yang, Jiao, and Guang regions, it is called Gu; people in Jiangnan process its bark to weave cloth; they also pound it to make paper, several zhang long, with excellent luster; they also eat its tender shoots as vegetables; it mainly treats wind-bi in the four limbs, and red and white dysentery. Its leaves treat epistaxis (nosebleed). *Duanju* states: For severe epistaxis flowing like liters without stopping, take Chu leaves, crush to extract juice, drink three sheng, if not stopped, drink again repeatedly, it is miraculous. Long-term epistaxis will also heal. Chu paper also enters medicine. Seen in Liu Yuxi's *Chuanxin Fang*, treating women with continuous menorrhagia, coming at irregular times, take thirty sheets of desk cloth, burn to ash, mix with half a sheng of clear wine and take, it settles instantly. If in winter, take with warm wine. It works immediately for postpartum blood dizziness. For those already dead, remove the board teeth and instill, they can revive after one day. Nowadays, Chu paper is used most extensively, sometimes its ash is used, which is very effective for stopping bleeding from metal wounds. Chu cloth is no longer seen in use. Medical formulas only value Chushi, while other parts are rarely used. Folk customs sometimes take the white juice from the middle of its branches, applying it to treat tinea, which is very effective. Yang Yan's *Nanxing Fang* treats malaria-induced dysentery, regardless of age, occurring over a hundred times a day, take three liang of dried Chu leaves, cook and pound into powder, decoct with Wumei (Mume Fruit) soup and take one fangcunbi twice a day, wrap the powder in mutton meat, insert into the anus, dysentery stops immediately.
