Also known as *Mumi* (Wood Honey).
Nature: Moistening. Function: Resolves alcohol toxicity.
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Neutral.
Functions: Relieves thirst and removes irritability, moistens the five zang organs, resolves alcohol toxicity (*Ge Gen* [Puerariae Radix] also resolves alcohol toxicity, but its dispersing action is inferior to that of *Zhi Ju Zi* [Hoveniae Semen]. If a *Zhi Ju* tree grows outside a house, brewing wine inside often yields poor results. Zhao Yide treated cases of alcohol toxicity and heat caused by sexual exhaustion by adding *Ge Gen* to formulas tonifying qi and blood. After one dose causing slight sweating, the patient felt more fatigued and the fever persisted. This indicated that qi and blood were deficient and could not withstand the dispersing nature of *Ge Gen*; only *Zhi Ju* would suffice. Occasionally, dried *Zhi Ju* was added, resulting in a cure. The *Dongpo Collection* records: Yang Yingchen suffered from Xiao Ke [Wasting-Thirst], drinking several dou of water daily and doubling his food intake, with frequent urination. Medicines for Xiao Ke worsened his condition. Physician Zhang Gong diagnosed him, laughing, "You nearly died by mistake." He prescribed pills made from *Shexiang Dangmenzi* [Moschus, central pellet], moistened with wine, swallowed with decoction of *Zhi Ju Zi*. The disease was cured. Asked for the reason, Zhang Gong said: "Xiao Ke and Xiao Zhong [Middle Wasting] result from weak spleen and failed kidney, where earth fails to control water. Your spleen pulse is extremely hot, while the kidney pulse remains strong. This is likely due to excessive consumption of alcohol and fruits, causing accumulated heat in the spleen. Hence, polyphagia and polydipsia lead to polyuria; this is neither true Xiao nor Ke. *Shexiang* neutralizes alcohol and fruit toxins, and *Zhi Ju* overcomes alcohol toxicity; thus, these two substances are borrowed to eliminate the toxin of alcohol and fruit. Lei Xiao stated: 'When using Moschus, the central pellet is especially excellent.'").
Common name: Ji Ju [Chicken Spur], named because the fruit is curved like a chicken's spur. In Shu, it is called Ji Gou. After frost, it turns yellow-red and is very sweet. Its leaves put into wine cause the wine to turn into water.
Tonifies Ming Men [Gate of Vitality]; flesh is moistening, skin is astringent.
Taste: Sweet. Qi/Property: Hot.
Skin is astringent (The skin收敛 lung qi to stop asthma and secures the kidney to arrest essence leakage. It is rarely used in modern medicine; I believe if used, it would surpass Jin Ying Zi [Chrysanthemi Fructus] and Lian Xu [Nelumbinis Plumula]). Flesh is moistening; skin juice is green-black, belongs to Water, enters the Kidney.
Opens Ming Men, benefits San Jiao [Triple Burner], warms the Lung, moistens the intestines, tonifies qi and nourishes blood.
When combined with Bu Gu Zhi [Psoraleae Fructus], one Wood and one Fire, greatly tonifies the Lower Jiao (Walnut belongs to Wood, Po Gu Zhi [Bu Gu Zhi] belongs to Fire, possessing the wonder of Wood generating Fire. Ancient saying: "If Huang Bo [Phellodendri Cortex] lacks Zhi Mu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma], then Po Gu Zhi lacks Walnut, just as the Water Mother [Jellyfish] cannot exist without the Shrimp." Li Shizhen said: "San Jiao is the distinct envoy of Qi; Ming Men is the root origin of San Jiao. Ming Men refers to the residence, the organ storing essence and connecting to the uterus/bao; San Jiao refers to the region governed, the department of excretion and digestion. One is Substance [Ti], one is Function [Yong]. Its substance is neither fat nor muscle, wrapped in white membrane, located between the two kidneys at the seventh vertebra of the spine, connected to the spine, communicating downward with the two kidneys, upward with the Heart and Lung, and penetrating to the brain. It is the source of life, the birthplace of Ministerial Fire, and the repository of essence and qi. Both humans and animals possess it. Generating humans and all things, all emerge from here. What the *Nei Jing* calls 'beside the seventh vertebra, there is the Small Heart' refers to this. The *Nan Jing* erroneously identified the right kidney as Ming Men. Gao Yangsheng inherited this erroneous Pulse Classic, until Zhu Gong, Chen Yan, and Dai Qizong began to refute it. Kidney and Ming Men communicate, store essence, and detest dryness. Walnut resembles its form. Juice is green-black, thus entering the North [Water element]. Assisting Po Gu Zhi, it moistens dryness and regulates blood, allowing essence and qi to fill internally and blood vessels to flow freely, eliminating various diseases. Male-female intercourse relies on this Ming Huo [Fire of Vitality] to conceive. A person's fortune, longevity, or premature death all root here."
Because San Jiao is unobstructed, it treats:
Upper: Deficient-cold asthma and cough (Can warm Lung and transform phlegm. Hong Mai had chronic phlegm disease. In his later years, facing imperial edicts, he chewed three Walnuts and three slices of Ginger before bed, drank soup, then chewed ginger and walnut again as before, lying quietly ensured cure. Hong Mai followed this advice; by morning, phlegm vanished and cough stopped. Hong's young son suffered from phlegm-asthma, dreamed of Guanyin instructing him to take Ren Shen Hu Tao Tang [Ginseng and Walnut Decoction], which cured him. The next day, after peeling the skin, asthma returned. Using the skin again, he recovered in two nights. Presumably because the skin can astringe Lung qi. Walnut, Cong Bai [Allii Fistulosi Bulbus], Jiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma], and Cha [Camelliae Sinensis Folium] in equal parts, pounded and decocted, can induce sweating and disperse cold.)
Lower: Deficiency-pain in waist and legs (Can tonify Kidney.)
Internal: Various pains in heart and abdomen.
External: Sores, swellings, and various toxins (Can harmonize Ying and Wei [Nutritive and Defensive levels].)
All can be eliminated.
However, it moves Wind-Phlegm and aids Kidney Fire (Chewing three pieces roasted with skin can prolong sexual endurance). Those with Phlegm-Fire and accumulated heat should take little.
Oily ones are toxic, hence used to kill parasites and treat sores.
The green skin outside the shell can be pressed for oil to blacken beard and hair.
For moistening dryness and nourishing blood, use peeled meat. For astringent effects, use with skin.
