**Jingmingzi (Vitex Fruit)**: Light and dispersing, it dissipates wind-heat in the upper body. Pungent and bitter, slightly cold, light and floating, with ascending and dispersing properties. It enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel. It searches out wind, cools blood, and unblocks the nine orifices. It treats spasms and contractures due to damp-bi, headache and tinnitus in the brain (the Taiyang meridians connect to the brain), red eyes and toothache (teeth belong to the Kidney as the surplus of bone; however, the upper gums belong to the Foot-Yangming, and the lower gums to the Hand-Yangming. Wind-heat attacking upward from the Yangming channels causes teeth to loosen, swell, and pain), and conditions of wind-deficiency in the head and face. It brightens the eyes, strengthens teeth, promotes hair growth, and moistens the skin. Remove the membrane, crush before use; some are steamed with wine or stir-fried. Adverse with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Wutou (Aconiti Radix).
**Shinanye (Acanthopanacis Senticosi Caulis)**: Dispersing, removes wind, tonifies Kidney. Pungent disperses wind, bitter consolidates Kidney. Tonifies internal injury caused by Yin deficiency, benefits sinews, bones, skin, and hair; it is a key herb for treating Kidney deficiency, weak legs, and wind-bi. Women should not take it for long periods, as it may cause longing for men (Shizhen said: Nowadays, people do not know how to use this herb at all, likely because *Yaoxing Lun* states it causes impotence. They do not realize this herb can strengthen the Kidney; some people exploit this to indulge in lust, leading to weakness, and then blame the herb, which is lamentable. Ang notes: Shinanye does tonify Yin and dispel wind, but its pungent nature is not hot, nor does it assist Ministerial Fire. It has not been heard of being used in formulas for licentiousness. The claim in *Bielu* regarding "causing longing for men" is likely unreliable). Those from Guanzhong are superior. Use after roasting.
**Xinyi (Magnolia Flower Bud)**: Also known as Moubihua. Disperses wind-heat in the Upper Jiao. Pungent, warm, light and floating. Enters the Qi level of the Lung and Stomach, assisting the clear Yang of the Stomach to ascend and reach the head. Warms the middle, resolves the muscle layer, unblocks the nine orifices, and benefits the joints. Mainly treats Biyuan (nasal sinusitis) and nasal congestion (The Lung governs the nose. Heat transferring from the Gallbladder to the Brain causes turbid nasal discharge like a spring; wind-cold lodging in the Brain causes congestion. The Classics state: Brain fluid seeps out as mucus. Wang Bing stated: If Gallbladder fluid is not clear, it becomes turbid mucus, flowing endlessly like a spring, hence called Biyuan), as well as headache, facial melasma (sound 'han', black spots; can be made into facial cream), vertigo, toothache, and diseases of wind-heat in the nine orifices. However, its nature is penetrating and moving; those with Qi deficiency and flourishing fire should avoid it (Shizhen said: The Lung opens into the nose, and the Yangming Stomach meridian circles the nose and ascends. The Brain is the mansion of the Original Spirit, and the nose is the orifice of the Life Gate. When the Middle Qi is insufficient and Clear Yang fails to ascend, the head tilts, and the nine orifices become obstructed. My fellow townsman, Mr. Zheng Jingxi, once told me: Human memory resides in the Brain. Children who forget easily have brains that are not fully developed; the elderly who are forgetful have gradually emptying brains. Whenever a person sees something externally, a shadow remains in the Brain. Ang notes: Nowadays, when recalling past events, people often close their eyes and look upward while thinking; this is the intent of concentrating spirit in the Brain. Without Mr. Zheng's insight, people would remain accustomed to it without noticing. Shizhen said: The Brain is the mansion of Yuan Qi; this seems to secretly align with this meaning.). Remove the outer fuzz (fuzz irritates the Lung, causing cough); use after slight stir-frying. Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) is the guiding drug. Adverse with Yiyuzhuang (Mittrostibnite); wary of Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
