[Morinda Officinalis Root]
The flavor is pungent and sweet, the nature is slightly warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats severe wind-pathogenic factors, impotence with inability to achieve erection, strengthens the sinews and bones, calms the five Zang organs, tonifies the middle Jiao, enhances willpower, and benefits Qi.
(Morinda officinalis, also known as "Bu Diao Cao" [Non-Withering Grass], originally grew in the valleys of Ba Commandery and Xiapi. Currently, it is also produced in prefectures and commanderies across Jianghuai and Hedong, yet those from Sichuan and Shu are considered superior. The leaves resemble... Morinda grows in Sichuan and Shu; its pungent and sweet flavor endows it with the Qi transformation of Taiyin Metal and Earth. Its nature is slightly warm, and it does not wither through winter, further endowing it with the Biao-Yang (Marked Yang) Qi transformation of Taiyang. Treating severe wind-pathogenic factors relies on obtaining Taiyin's Metal Qi, as Metal can control Wind. Treating impotence and strengthening sinews and bones relies on obtaining Taiyang's Biao-Yang, as Yang can benefit Yin. Calming the five Zang organs and tonifying the middle Jiao relies on obtaining Taiyin's Earth Qi; when Earth Qi is abundant, it calms the five Zang organs and tonifies the middle. Enhancing willpower occurs because the Kidney stores Will (Zhi) and belongs to Water, while Taiyang Heavenly Qi connects downward to Water. Benefiting Qi occurs because the Lung governs Qi and belongs to Metal, while Taiyin Heavenly Qi externally harmonizes with the Lung.)
[Schisandra Chinensis Fruit]
The flavor is sour and the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily benefits Qi, treats cough with rebellious Qi ascending, emaciation and weakness due to labor injury, supplements deficiencies, strengthens Yin essence, and benefits male Jing (Essence).
(Schisandra chinensis, named "Xuan Ji" in the *Bie Lu* [Supplement to the Classic of Materia Medica], originally grew in the valleys of Qishan and Dai Commandery. Currently, it is particularly abundant in prefectures and commanderies of Hedong and Shaanxi, and also found between Hangzhou and Yuezhou, hence the distinction between Southern and Northern varieties. Those produced in the South are red with round seeds. Those produced in the North are red mixed with black, with seed shapes resembling pig kidneys. For medicinal use, the Northern variety is preferred. It grows as a vine, with reddish stems, yellow flowers, and white fruit that turns green when fresh and purple when ripe, possessing five colors. The fruit possesses five flavors: the skin and flesh are sweet and sour, the core is bitter and pungent, and all parts contain a salty taste. Although there are five flavors, the sour taste predominates. Named "Xuan Ji," it signifies receiving the Essence of Water and extending to Wood. Containing a salty taste indicates receiving the Essence of Water. A predominant sour taste indicates extending to Wood. Essentially, the Qi of the Five Elements originates from Pre-heaven Qi and generates Post-heaven Wood.)
Schisandra chinensis possesses five colors and five flavors, thereby receiving the Essence of the Five Movements. With a sour flavor and warm nature, it obtains the growing Qi of the East, thus primarily benefiting Qi. The Lung governs respiration, originating from the Kidney, with upper and lower aspects interacting. Cough with rebellious Qi ascending indicates a lack of interaction between the Lung and Kidney. Schisandra chinensis can initiate the Water Essence of the Kidney and send it upward to the Lung, thus treating cough with rebellious Qi. Originating from Pre-heaven Water and transforming into Post-heaven Wood allows for mutual generation among the five Zang organs and sufficient Jing-Qi, thus treating emaciation and weakness due to labor injury and supplementing deficiencies. The seed resembles the kidney shape and generates saliva upon ingestion, thus primarily strengthening Yin. Women suffer from Blood deficiency, and men suffer from Jing deficiency; therefore, it benefits male Jing.
