Salty and cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats brightening the eyes and eye pain, tonifies qi, strengthens muscles and bones, and removes toxic gu (parasitic diseases).
(Rongyan [Rong Salt] is produced in the Western Rong region, hence its name. It is found in the sea southeast of Fulu City, Jiuquan. It is said that those from the North Sea are blue, and those from the South Sea are red. This is because seawater splashes onto mountain rocks, which condense into salt over a long period without human intervention. The so-called "North Sea" and "South Sea" refer to the north and south sides of the Western Sea, not the seas in the south or north of China. Both blue and red varieties are called Rongyan. Currently, medical prescriptions only use Qingyan [Blue Salt], not Hongyan [Red Salt].)
Rongyan is formed by the condensation of salty seawater within stones and soil. Its color varies between blue and red, indicating it has inherited the essence of Tianyi (Heavenly One), transforming into the Five Elements of Earth. Therefore, it assists the Heart Shen (Spirit) to brighten the eyes, nourishes Liver Blood to treat eye pain, supports Lung Metal to tonify qi, and aids Spleen and Kidney to strengthen muscles and bones. The Qi of the Five Zang Organs and the Three Yin Meridians converges in Kun Earth (Spleen), thus enabling it to remove Gu poison.
Pungent and warm in nature, toxic. It primarily treats carbuncles, ulcers, scabies, and itching; hot-heat induced malignant sores; leprosy-like diseases; necrotic tissue; eyebrow loss; kills hemorrhoid worms; and removes black spots and polyps.
(Duan Shi [Calcined Stone], also known as Shie [Stone Ash] or Shiduan, is made by burning bluestone by people in mountainous areas. A clay kiln is dug, with layers of firewood or coal alternating with layers of bluestone. Fire is lit from below, causing the layers to burn sequentially. Within one day and night, the stone turns to ash. There are two methods of preparation: wind-curing and water-curing. For medicinal use, wind-cured Duan Shi, especially aged ones, should be used.)
Stone is the bone of Earth. When burned by fire into ash, it becomes white in color, pungent in taste, and dry in nature. It inherits the Qi of Fire and Earth, forming the quality of Dry Metal. It dissolves upon exposure to wind, reflecting that Earth fears Wood; it dissolves upon exposure to water, reflecting that Fire fears Water. By inheriting Metal Qi, it dispels Wind, thus treating carbuncles, ulcers, scabies, and itching. By inheriting Earth Qi, it nourishes Yin, thus treating hot-heat malignant sores, leprosy-like diseases, and necrotic tissue. Due to its acrid and drying nature, it is taken in small amounts internally but applied externally in larger quantities. External application causes eyebrow loss, kills hemorrhoid worms, and removes black spots and polyps.
(Su Song stated: Ancient formulas often used Duan Shi combined with powdered herbs to treat metal wounds, which was highly effective. Li Shizhen stated: Duan Shi is a divine product for stopping bleeding, but it must not come into contact with water, as this will cause flesh to rot. Currently, Duan Shi is mixed with Chinese chives, pounded into cakes, pasted on walls, dried in the shade, and then finely ground into powder. This is used to treat traumatic injuries, stopping bleeding from broken skin miraculously.)
