[Odor and Flavor] Salty, cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats brightening the eyes and benefiting qi, raising yin, treating downward flow of foul blood, repelling gu poison, evil spirits, and inauspiciousness, and preventing nightmares during sleep.
(Note: The ancient character for "ling" is written as "yuan", while the modern character is "ling"; the vulgar writing abbreviates it. Antelope are found in the mountains inhabited by various tribes in Jianping, Yidu, Liangzhou, Zhenzhou, Yangzhou, Shangluo, as well as in Qinlong and Western Regions. They resemble sheep but are larger and dark greenish-blue. At night, they roost alone, hanging their horns on trees so that their bodies do not touch the ground, to guard against predators. This can be considered spiritual. Hence, the character consists of 'deer' and 'spirit', abbreviated as 'yuan'. Their nature is kind and they dislike fighting; even if forced into a fake fight, they tend to disperse. Their horns are over a chi long, with distinct rings encircling them like finger grip marks. Those with twenty-four segments possess particularly divine power. Two-horned ones are common. One-horned ones are superior, containing a natural wooden core within the horn. In the Western Regions, there is diamond stone, resembling purple quartzite, which does not melt after hundred refinings and cannot be struck by gold or iron. However, if wrapped in cotton and struck with antelope horn, it naturally melts like ice. Furthermore, tapir bones were falsely passed off as Buddha teeth by deceitful monks; other materials cannot break them, but striking them with this horn also shatters them. All are due to mutual aversion of natures.)
Antelope horn is salty and cold, inheriting water qi. The wooden core at the center of the horn inherits wood qi. By inheriting water qi to nourish liver wood, it primarily brightens the eyes. Innate qi originates from water, emerging from yin to yang. Antelope horn inherits the essence of water, thus it can benefit kidney qi and raise yin. When liver qi fails to ascend, foul blood flows downward. Antelope horn inherits wood qi and assists the liver, thus removing downward-flowing foul blood. The antelope is a beast of spiritual knot-untying; its horn has twenty-four segments, corresponding to the twenty-four solar terms of heaven. Thus, it repels gu poison, evil spirits, and inauspiciousness, and prevents nightmares during sleep.
[Odor and Flavor] Salty, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats blindness (qingmang), brightens the eyes, stops palpitations and fright, and halts cold diarrhea. Long-term use calms the mind, benefits qi, lightens the body, and kills scabies mites. Burning it when entering the mountains repels evil spirits, tigers, wolves, and wild beasts.
(The types of sheep vary slightly between north and south, all giving birth after four months of gestation. Their eyes lack spirit, and their nature is fond of fighting; they do not avoid strong opponents. Among livestock, they belong to fire, hence they reproduce easily and have a hot nature, preferring dryness and disliking dampness. They become fat eating Gelsemium elegans (Gouwen), store fat eating Curculigo orchoides (Xianmao), thrive eating Epimedium (Xianlingpi), and die eating Rhododendron molle (Naoyanghua). The suitability and taboos of physical properties are unpredictable. 'Di' is another name for 'diyang', referring to male sheep. Their horns are best when from the blue-green antelope.)
Antelope horn is salty and cold, inheriting water qi, whereas di sheep horn is salty and warm, inheriting fire qi. Thus, the *Neijing* states: Sheep are fire animals. Treating blindness and brightening the eyes is because abundant sunlight leads to clear vision. Stopping palpitations and cold diarrhea occurs because the essence of fire is spirit; when spirit is calm, palpitations cease, and when fire prevails, cold diarrhea is eliminated. The heart is the fire organ, thus long-term use calms the mind. Benefiting qi refers to benefiting yang qi. When yang qi is abundant, the body feels light, and yin-type scabies mites can be killed. Since di sheep belongs to fire, and its horn is extremely bright, entering the mountains involves much yin-cold qi. Thus, burning it repels evil spirits, tigers, wolves, and wild beasts, which also aligns with the meaning of not avoiding strength in confrontation.
