The sour flavor has an astringent property, allowing the Heart Qi to remain within and secure body fluids; it is used for exterior deficiency with spontaneous sweating. When Liver Qi is vigorous, blood returns to its vessels; it is used to treat insomnia lasting all night.
Those with gallbladder deficiency have easily agitated Heart Spirit, which is the origin of palpitations and night sweats. Those with Liver Blood deficiency have blood failing to return to its vessels, which is the origin of empty irritability and insomnia.
Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) can tonify the Liver and benefit the Gallbladder, so that Blood receives nourishment, and various symptoms are pacified.
It should not be used when there are excess pathogenic heat in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, due to its astringent nature.
Sweet and acrid in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. Averse to Chrysanthemum (*Juhua*). Steamed, sun-dried, or stir-fried.

The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen), and the Kidneys store Essence (Jing) and Will (Zhi). Deficiency of Heart and Kidney leads to palpitations. Entering the Heart to nourish the Spirit, and entering the Kidneys to stabilize the Will, palpitations will surely heal. A pleasing complexion and clear senses are the result of mutual irrigation between Heart Blood and Kidney Water. Wang Haogu stated: "Bai Zi Ren (Semen Platycladi) can moisten the Liver."
Bai Zi Ren is oily and slippery; those with diarrhea should not take it, nor should those with excessive phlegm. Materials with exuded oil should not be used in prescriptions.

However, if urinary difficulty is caused by Blood deficiency, using it will instead cause suffering from dryness and urgency."
Its diuretic and leaching nature is unfavorable for deficient persons. It should not be taken by those with Yin deficiency and internal heat, or where fire flares up and water dries up.

Long Chi (Dens Draconis): Calms the Heart and pacifies the Spirit, settles fright and stops spasms.
Long Gu (Os Draconis) mainly treats Liver diseases. Since the Kidneys govern bones, it also benefits the Kidneys. Xu Shuwei said: "The Liver stores the Hun, which is capable of transformation. For those whose Hun flies and is unsettled, treat them with Long Chi."
Long Gu has too strong an astringent effect; unless it is a case of chronic illness with collapse of deficiency, do not administer it recklessly.
