[Bitter Melon]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature.
Internally connects to the Heart and Spleen, externally reaches the four limbs. It can expel evil pathogens and is most effective in promoting the eruption of smallpox/rashes.
Decocted with wine. Covering the head and face, holding it in the mouth, and spraying over the body will immediately induce the eruption of rashes.
[Garlic]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, toxic. Enters the Spleen and Kidney meridians. Avoid honey.
Promotes digestion of grains and resolves food stagnation, dispels malevolent influences and drives out evil pathogens. Highly effective in breaking up accumulations and masses; applying heat (moxibustion) to malignant sores is certain to be effective. Crushed and applied to the chest, it aids the external dispersal of obstruction and blockage. Ground and applied to the soles of the feet, it has the miraculous effect of guiding fire-heat downward.
Garlic is used most frequently, with rapid efficacy. When applied externally to the skin and flesh, it causes pain, which indicates its strong searching and clearing action when entering the stomach and intestines.
Its nature is hot and its odor is pungent/foul. Those who are deficient and weak with internal heat must absolutely avoid consuming it. Even if indicated, do not overuse it, as it generates phlegm and stirs fire, damages the eyes, and depletes blood. Be cautious.
[Winter Melon]
Pungent and bitter in flavor, warm in nature, slippery in texture, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians.
Warms the middle and dissipates nodules, directs qi downward and disperses blood stasis. Suitable for consumption in cases of chest bi (obstruction) with stabbing pain and heart pain. Also treats chronic dysentery and a sensation of a bone stuck in the throat. Makes the body light and resistant to cold, and can tonify insufficiency.
*Bencao Huiyan* states: "Not suitable for consumption by patients with yin deficiency and fever."

[Winter Melon Peel/Seed]
Sweet and bland in flavor, slightly cool in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, Small Intestine, and Large Intestine meridians.
Clears summer-heat and resolves toxicity, promotes urination and transforms phlegm. For chest oppression, diaphragmatic heat, thirst, irritability, edema, scanty urine, and dampness encumbering the spleen leading to reduced appetite.
Boiling and eating the winter melon with peel and seeds during the summer is quite beneficial to the person.
Winter Melon Peel: Promotes urination and reduces edema. Washing the face removes dark spots.
Winter Melon Seed: Clears the lungs and resolves abscesses. Treats lung abscess and intestinal abscess.
[Melon/Cantaloupe]
Sweet in flavor, cold in nature.
Relieves summer-heat and eliminates vexation, promotes urination and awakens from intoxication.
Melons are cold in nature; dried melons are even colder. Ji Han's fu says: "Dried melons become cold, oil-fried melons become cold," illustrating the difference in material properties.
Used alone as a single herb, it is named "Natural White Tiger Decoction" (Tian Sheng Bai Hu Tang). However, excessive consumption damages the Spleen and aids dampness, making one prone to malaria and dysentery in autumn. The sweet melon is similar in this regard.
[Loofah]
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
Transforms phlegm and cools blood, clears heat and benefits the diaphragm. Dispels wind and resolves toxicity, excellent for clearing the upper jiao. Beneficial for nasal diseases and dental ailments, malar swelling, and lip stiffness. Consumption is beneficial, and regular use is harmless.
Stabilizes qi and secures the fetus, ensuring normal pregnancy and childbirth. It also promotes lactation, ensuring health for both mother and child.
