See the chapter on Qi-tonifying herbs for details; here we supplement only those relevant to the throat.
For treating throat disorders, this herb is often relied upon: it is used for redness and swelling of the throat to clear the throat. It is frequently combined with Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), aged radish flowers (Chen Luobo Ying), and Golden Lotus Flower (Jinlian Hua).
It is used for ulceration, sores, and blisters in the throat to clear fire toxins. It is frequently combined with Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), or Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian). It is used for rotting tissue in the throat to detoxify. It is frequently combined with Paris Polyphylla Rhizome (Qiyeyi Zhihua) or Tinospora Sinensis Rhizome (Jinguolan). It is used for chronic weakness and pain in the throat to tonify deficiency. It is frequently combined with Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome (Yuzhu) or Glehnia Root (Beishashen). When added to powders for insufflation into the throat, it also has effects of relieving pain, reducing swelling, easing urgency, facilitating swallowing, and improving taste. In the treatment of throat diseases, except in cases accompanied by vomiting (where Licorice Dew [Gancao Lu] may be used as a substitute if necessary), it is often combined with other herbs. It can serve as the principal herb, an assistant herb, or a guiding/herald herb. For laryngeal abscesses (Houyong), furuncles (Houjie), and carbuncles (Houding), Licorice Joints (Gancao Jie) are used instead, as they specifically treat swellings and various sores.
This herb tastes bitter and pungent, is neutral in nature, and non-toxic. It enters the Lung Meridian. It is incompatible with Bletilla Rhizome (Baiji) and Gentiana Root (Longdancao). It should be soaked in rice water, the rhizome head removed, and lightly roasted.
It clears Lung heat to eliminate lung abscesses and phlegm-heat, opens nasal congestion, and regulates the throat. It promotes pus discharge and blood circulation, directs Qi downward, and resolves phlegm. It stabilizes abdominal pain caused by dysentery and stops irritability and pain in the chest and hypochondrium.
Platycodon Root (Jiegeng) acts as a "vessel agent," guiding other herbs upward to the upper parts of the body to achieve therapeutic success, making it an essential herb for the Lung Meridian. It is indispensable for Wind disorders, Stagnation disorders, and Lung disorders. However, since its efficacy focuses on the "Canopy Organ" (Lung), it should not be included in formulas that attack or tonify the Lower Jiao.
This herb tastes salty and pungent, is warm in nature, and non-toxic. It enters the Lung and Spleen Meridians. It is antagonistic to Mantis Egg Case (Sangpiaoxiao), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Poria (Fuling), and Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie). It should be soaked in rice wash water for one day until the mucus floats to the surface, then dried over low heat, removing silk-like structures and black mouth plates.
It dispels Wind and relieves spasms, clears the throat and reduces swelling. It treats aphonia due to stroke and removes skin itching caused by Wind. It transforms Phlegm-Wind, eliminates scrofula (Luoli), extracts toxin from carbuncles, fades scars, treats male genital itching, and female metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (Benglin).
This refers to silkworm pupae affected by wind disease; using them to treat Wind disorders likely relies on the principle of sympathetic resonance of their qi.
Silkworm cast skins and paper made from silkworms connected to cast skins are used to treat diseases of the gums, throat, and voice.
