Sour in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic, enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.
Eliminates food stagnation, removes foul qi from the intestines and stomach. Resolves alcohol toxicity, treats halitosis in drinkers. For pregnant women with a bland taste in the mouth and loss of appetite, dietary therapy with it harmonizes and soothes the chest and diaphragm.
Pomelo Peel: Sweet and pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.
Promotes digestion and relieves chest fullness, disperses pent-up qi. Resolves phlegm and stops coughing; steeping in wine and honey is highly suitable.
Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Stomach and Kidney meridians.
Tonifies qi and strengthens the intestines and stomach, tonifies the Kidneys to treat soreness and weakness of the waist and legs.
Su Ziyu wrote in his poem: "As I age, my waist and legs grow weaker; the mountain old man takes the ancient prescription of chestnuts. When guests come, he tells them how he swallows slowly at dawn and dusk, gathering the white jade paste."
This records the benefits of eating chestnuts, thus preserved as a mnemonic verse.
Sweet, sour, and astringent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic.
Beneficial for dry throat and thirst. For diarrhea, dysentery, and leukorrhea, its astringent properties are relied upon.
For severe redness, swelling, and pain in the throat, applying pomegranate juice can stop the pain.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians.
Tonifies Heart deficiency and enhances wisdom, harmonizes Stomach qi to nourish the Spleen. Eliminates forgetfulness and palpitations, calms the spirit and promotes deep sleep. Essential when blood fails to return to the Spleen; suitable for those with excessive mental worry.
Neither hot nor cold, its balanced nature is precious. Its alias "Yi Zhi" (Wisdom-Enhancing) is because it assists the Heart in generating wisdom. In Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), it serves as a guiding herb, as among the five flavors, sweet first enters the Spleen. Taoists use Longan Aril (Longyan Rou), chewing over a thousand pieces until saliva is abundant, then swallowing mixed with saliva; this is the method of consuming Yu Quan (Jade Spring).
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung and Kidney meridians.
Assists Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) to treat flaccidity syndromes and strengthen Yin; combined with Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate), it turns white hair black. Long-term consumption moistens the intestines and stomach, and regular use beautifies the skin. Opens the Mingmen (Gate of Life) and regulates the San Jiao (Triple Burner), treating waist/leg issues and heart/abdominal pain.
An infant with phlegm-wheezing who had not nursed for five days was treated with Ren Shen Hu Tao Tang (Ginseng and Walnut Decoction); the wheezing stopped immediately. The next day, after removing the walnut skin, the wheezing recurred; resuming intake with the skin led to recovery. This is likely because the skin has the effect of astringing the Lung.
Using it alone, eaten with the skin on an empty stomach, is most effective for securing essence.
Contraindicated for those with phlegm-heat in the Lungs or blazing fire in the Mingmen.
