(Huarui Shi, also known as Huarui Shi. When used in pills or powders, seal the top of a jar with clay, calcine over fire until thoroughly heated to remove "fire toxicity," then grind into fine powder, process by water flotation (shui fei), and dry for use.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Sour, astringent, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Treats bleeding from metallic weapon wounds. Scrape the powder and apply externally; the wound closes immediately without suppuration. Also treats female blood syncope (xue yun) and lochia retention. Treats all types of hemorrhage, internal leakage from trauma, and corneal opacity (mu yi). This herb was not used in ancient formulas. In recent times, it has been ground together with Sulfur (Liu Huang) and applied to metallic wounds, showing miraculous efficacy. For those suddenly injured by blades who cannot receive immediate treatment, applying the scraped powder is also effective. Old texts did not record the flavor/nature of Huarui Shi. Current trials indicate its nature is neutral, with a sour and astringent taste. It is likely a drug entering the Jueyin channel blood level. Its function specializes in stopping bleeding, transforming blood into liquid state (resolving stasis), utilizing the astringent property to consolidate. Furthermore, it can expel dead fetus and placenta, removing bad blood. Once bad blood is resolved, there are no obstructions for the fetus or placenta. Li Dongyuan stated: for retained placenta, astringent agents can induce expulsion. Thus, Red Kaolin (Chishi Zhi) can also expel the placenta, sharing the same principle. Ge Kejiu treated hematemesis of several sheng/dou using Huarui Shi San (Huarui Stone Powder); the *Heji Jufang* (Formulas of the Bureau of Prescriptions) uses Huarui Shi San for various bleeds, trauma, metallic wounds, and obstetric issues, claiming it transforms blood into water. Thus, the efficacy of this stone surpasses ordinary herbs.
