[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, warm, non-toxic. The therapeutic action is floating and ascending, belonging to Yang. It enters the Qi level of the Foot Jueyin (Liver) Meridian.
[Indications]
Treats alternating chills and fever, shu lou (scrofula), luo li (cervical lymphadenopathy) with sores. Breaks up stagnant Qi, moves downward blood stasis, removes damp jaundice, dispels pathogenic factors, eliminates sweating caused by fatigue, thirst, and cold wind. Decocted juice is taken internally. Crushed into a paste and mixed with vinegar for external application on ding zhong (furuncles) and toxic swellings. Treats generalized bi syndrome (numbness and pain) caused by aversion to wind and thief wind. Treats heart deficiency with forgetfulness. Enhances physical strength and replenishes essence. Promotes the free flow of blood vessels and transmits insufficient Qi of the five Zang organs. Assists the Spleen and Stomach. Mainly treats blood fatigue with Qi stagnation due to wind pathogen causing fullness, back and spine pain with spontaneous sweating. Regulates painful swelling of tendons and bones in hong gang jiao (podagra/foot qi) and yin yang du (severe toxic febrile disease). Treats headache, vertigo, and dizziness caused by Shang Han (cold damage), spasm of tendons in hands and feet, and maculopapular eruptions. Generally, because Jingjie enters the Qi level of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, its efficacy lies in dispelling wind pathogens, dispersing blood stasis, breaking up Qi stagnation, and eliminating toxin-induced sores. Since Jueyin corresponds to Wind-Wood, governs Blood, and houses Ministerial Fire, it is a crucial herb for treating wind diseases, blood diseases, and sores.
Contraindications: Antagonistic with donkey meat, scaleless fish, and pufferfish.
(When processing, dig up the roots, soak and scrub with flowing water from the east to remove soil, beat to remove the core, soak overnight in cooked Licorice decoction, then dry by baking.)
[Flavor and Nature]

(When using Hu Po, distinguish between red pine resin, stone hu po, water hu po, flower hu po, object-image hu po, xiang hu po, and true hu po. Red pine resin resembles hu po but is turbid, larger, brittle, with horizontal grain. Water hu po is mostly non-red, pale yellow, and wrinkled. Stone hu po is heavy like stone, yellow, and unsuitable for use. Flower hu po has grain resembling the heartwood of new Masson pine, with stripes of red and yellow. Object-image hu po contains natural biological forms within, which is spiritually profound for medicinal use. The length of xiang hu po lies here. True hu po is blood-red; when rubbed with cloth to generate heat, it attracts mustard seeds, which authenticates it. "Hu po picks up grass" refers to grass weeds, not mustard seeds; some claim "mustard seed" is an error. For medicinal use, mix Cuscutae Semen (Dodder seed) powder with water in a porcelain pot, place hu po inside, and boil from Si hour to Shen hour. Abnormal light should appear. Grind into powder and sieve for use.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Calms the Five Zang organs, stabilizes Hun and Po spirits, kills demons and evil ghosts, dissipates blood stasis, unblocks the five types of Lin syndrome (dysuria), strengthens the Heart and brightens the eyes, grinds away corneal opacity, stops heart pain and epilepsy. Treats Gu Du (poisonous parasites/toxins), breaks up accumulations and masses. Treats postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis. Stops bleeding and generates flesh, heals metal wounds. Clears the Lungs and benefits the Small Intestine. Ancient formulas used it to promote urination, contributing to drying dampness and strengthening the Spleen Earth. When the Spleen can transform and transport, and Lung Qi descends, urination becomes patent. However, if urine retention is due to blood deficiency, using it may instead cause suffering from dryness and urgency.
