[Shi (Persimmon)]
The taste is sweet and the nature is cold. It enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its function is specifically to moisten the lungs, stop coughing, clear the stomach, and relieve irritability. Dried persimmons are sweet in taste and cold in nature; they astringe the intestines to stop diarrhea, resolve old blood stasis, treat heat-type coughs, and reverse regurgitation. When burned to ash, taken at two qian per dose, it treats lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Persimmon frost generates body fluids, resolves phlegm, and treats pain in the throat and tongue. The nature of persimmons is quite cold; those with no fire in the Lung Meridian, as well as those with cold coughs, cold dysentery, or loose stools due to deficiency-cold, should avoid it. If eaten together with crabs, it causes abdominal pain and diarrhea. Persimmon calyx combined with Dingxiang (Clove) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) opens stagnation and disperses phlegm, treating persistent hiccups. This follows the principle of "treating from the opposite side" (Cong Zhi), and trials show it is quite effective.
[Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit)]
The taste is sour. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its function is specifically to dispel damp-bi syndrome, Hong Kong foot (gouty arthritis/foot-and-mouth disease contextually referring to severe leg ailments), convulsions due to Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), and weakness of the waist and feet. Excessive consumption damages teeth and bones, leading to Lin Bi (difficulty in urination). Aged fruit is superior. Slices of Mugua spread on mats can repel bedbugs. Ground into powder and mixed with saliva from eels for topical application, it is highly effective for inverted flower hemorrhoids.
[Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit)]
The taste is sour and sweet, slightly warm. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its function is specifically to digest food accumulation and promote the eruption of smallpox/variolous rashes. Combined with Huixiang (Fennel), it treats hernia with testicular swelling; combined with Zicao (Arnebia Root), it treats dry and blackened rashes; combined with Shatang (Brown Sugar), it eliminates lochia and treats lower abdominal pain. Those with Spleen deficiency and aversion to food should avoid it. In cases where Renshen (Ginseng) is unsuitable, taking Shanzha provides relief. It rapidly resolves meat accumulation. Applied topically, it cures chilblains immediately. The seeds are good for treating hernias and facilitating childbirth.
[Juhong/Chenpi (Tangerine Peel/Red Tangerine Peel)]
The taste is bitter and pungent. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its function is specifically to regulate Qi and stop vomiting. Combined with Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), it tonifies the Spleen; combined with Gancao (Licorice Root), it tonifies the Lungs; combined with Xingren (Apricot Seed), it treats Qi obstruction in the Large Intestine and also treats Hong Kong foot rushing to the heart; combined with Taoren (Peach Seed), it treats Blood obstruction in the Large Intestine; combined with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), it treats vomiting, hiccuping, and cold extremities; combined with Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), it treats chronic Qi-type cough; combined with Shexiang (Musk), it treats breast abscesses in women; combined with Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), it treats damp-phlegm. Soaked in child's urine, it treats phlegm-cough; stir-fried with ginger juice, it treats phlegm accumulation and cold-phlegm; stir-fried with salt water, it directs action to the Lower Jiao; honey-roasted, it directs action to the Middle Jiao.
[Lizhihe (Litchi Seed)]
The taste is bitter. It enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its function is specifically to circulate Liver Qi, reduce swelling, and dissipate toxicity. It treats waist and kidney pain. Combined with Lizhihe (itself, often implying specific preparation or combination logic in classical texts, here likely referring to its own use or specific pairing context) for hernia, wine-fried usage is excellent. Leaves disperse breast abscesses.
[Jueluo (Tangerine Pith)]
The taste is bland and slightly bitter. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its function is specifically to unblock stagnant Qi and vessel distension in the meridians, and to drive out accumulated phlegm between the skin and membranes.
