[Collection of Explanations] Li Shizhen said: According to Xiong Taigu's "Jiyue Ji": The "Wooden Dog" grows in the mountains of Jiangshan County in Guangdong. Its shape resembles a black dog and it can climb trees.
Its skin, when made into clothing or mattresses, can promote the movement of blood and qi. Emperor Shizu of Yuan (Kublai Khan) suffered from foot ailments; he took its skin to make trousers, and people subsequently valued it highly. This was unheard of before. I (Li Shizhen) once heard people from Sichuan say: In western Sichuan, there is a Black Panther, large as a dog, black in color, with a tail like a dog. Its skin, made into fur coats and mattresses, is very warm. When traveling far in winter, wrapping meat in its skin keeps it warm for several days; locals also treasure it greatly. This also belongs to the category of Wooden Dogs, so it is appended here.
[Therapeutic Actions] Eliminates wind-dampness and bi-syndrome in the feet, invigorates blood vessels, and warms the waist and knees (Li Shizhen).

[Names] Dhole (Jackal-like dog).
Li Shizhen said: According to "Zishuo": The Dhole can overcome its own kind and knows how to sacrifice animals, which can be considered talented. Hence the character contains the radical "Cai" (talent). "Piya" states: Dhole means firewood. The common name describing its thin body as resembling a Dhole is correct.
[Collection of Explanations] Li Shizhen said: The Dhole is found in mountains everywhere; it belongs to the wild wolf family. Commonly known as the Dhole Dog, its shape resembles a dog but is whiter, with a low front and high rear, and a long tail. Its body is slender yet vigorous and fierce; its fur is yellowish-brown, and its teeth are like awls for biting prey. When moving in packs, even tigers fear them; they also enjoy eating sheep.
Their sound is like dogs; humans dislike them, believing they attract evil spirits, considering them inauspicious. Their odor is musky and foul. Luo Yuan said: It is traditionally believed that the dog is the uncle of the Dhole, kneeling whenever seeing a dog; this is merely mutual restraint.

Treats various Gan dysentery and ulcers in the abdomen; boil the juice to drink, or burn to ash and take with wine. The ash can also be applied to treat dental caries ulcers (Meng Shen.
