(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
Chen Cangqi stated: Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids with prolapse and stops bleeding. Roast until fragrant, soak in wine, and take. It grows in the valleys of Yongjia; its leaves resemble those of *Lycopus lucidus* (Zelan), stems are red, and it is two to three chi tall.
(Pronounced "Rou". Listed as Medium Grade in *Mingyi Bielu* [Record of Famous Physicians]).
[Correction] Transferred from the Vegetable Section to this section.
[Names] Xiangrou (from *Shiliao* [Dietary Therapy]), Xiangrong (ibid.), Xiangcai (from *Qianjin Fang* [Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold]), Beemicao [Bee Grass] (from *Bencao Gangmu* [Compendium of Materia Medica]).
Li Shizhen stated: "Ru" was originally written as "Fei". *Yupian* states: It is a type of vegetable similar to Su. Its aroma is fragrant, and its leaves are soft, hence the name. Young grass is called "Rong"; Meng Shen's *Shiliao* writing it as "Xiangrong" is incorrect. The common name Bee Grass describes the appearance of its flower heads.
[Collection of Explanations] Tao Hongjing stated: Every household has it, eaten raw as a vegetable. Dried in the tenth month.
Su Song stated: Planted everywhere, though less so in the north. It resembles *Perilla frutescens* (Baizu) but with finer leaves. Found in Shouchun and Xin'an. There is another variety there called Stone Xiangru, growing on rocks, with even finer stems and leaves, yellowish in color, and significantly more pungent and aromatic, making it superior for use. People in Wu treat it as Yinchen.
Kou Zongshi stated: Xiangru grows in mountains and wilds, found in Jinghu North and South, and the Two Rivers regions. Planted in gardens in Bian and Luo, used as vegetables during summer months. Leaves resemble Yinchen, flowers form purple spikes, with forty to fifty florets per spike, resembling Jingjie spikes but with a distinct aroma.
Li Shizhen stated: Xiangru exists in both wild and cultivated forms. In the Central Plains, it is planted in March, called Xiangcai, and used as vegetables. Zhu Danxi preferred large leaves, but fine-leaved varieties have stronger aroma and are now commonly used. Stems are square, leaf tips are notched, resembling small Huangjing leaves. Purple flowers form spikes in September. A variety with fine seeds and leaves, only a few cun high, with leaves resembling *Clerodendrum bungei* (Luozhu), is Stone Xiangru.
[Preparation] Lei Xiao stated: Upon harvesting, remove roots and keep leaves, chop and dry in the sun, avoiding fire. If taken up to ten liang, one must never eat Baishantao (white mountain peach) in their lifetime.
[Aroma and Taste] Pungent, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats cholera with abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea; dissipates edema (*Mingyi Bielu*). Dispels wind-heat, treats sudden muscle cramps. Boil into powder and take with water to stop epistaxis (Meng Shen). Directs Qi downward, clears irritability and heat, treats vomiting and cold Qi (Tang Dynasty - Da Ming). Brewed as tea in spring prevents heat diseases, harmonizes the middle and warms the stomach. Swish juice in mouth to remove bad breath (Wang Ying). Treats Hongkong foot [podagra/gout-like condition] coldness.
[Elucidation] Tao Hongjing stated: For cholera, boiled and drunk without fail to cure; made into decoctions to remove edema is especially good.
Su Song stated: For cholera with cramps, boil alone and take. If limbs are irritable and cold, sweating and thirsty, add Polygonum seeds and boil together.
Zhu Zhenheng stated: Xiangru belongs to Metal and Water, possessing effects reaching from top to bottom. Resolves summerheat and promotes urination; also treats water retention very quickly. Use large leaves, decoct strongly into pills. When the Lung receives it, clearing transformation occurs and heat naturally descends.
Li Shizhen stated: Physicians today use Xiangru Yin as the primary medicine for summerheat diseases. However, summerheat illness can result from seeking coolness and drinking cold substances, causing Yang Qi to be suppressed by Yin pathogens, leading to headache, fever with aversion to cold, irritability, thirst, or vomiting/diarrhea/cholera. This drug should be used to vent Yang Qi, scatter water, and harmonize the Spleen. If caused by irregular diet or overwork in individuals suffering from summerheat with great heat, great thirst, profuse sweating like rain, irritability, panting, or vomiting/diarrhea, this is a syndrome of internal injury from fatigue. One must use Dong Yuan's Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang or Renshen Baihu Tang to drain fire and benefit Yuan Qi. Using Xiangru would further deficiency the exterior and add heat. Xiangru is an exterior-releasing drug for summer, akin to Ephedra in winter; those with Qi deficiency should especially avoid excessive use. Now, people do not know that summerheat damages Yuan Qi; regardless of illness, they generally use it as tea, claiming it wards off summerheat—this is truly foolish dreaming. Moreover, its nature is warm; hot ingestion causes vomiting. It should only be taken cold to avoid rejection. Its efficacy in treating water retention is indeed miraculous. A scholar's wife had edema from waist down and on face, panting desperately, unable to lie flat, loose stools, and scanty urine; medicines failed. I diagnosed her pulse as deep and large; deep indicates water, large indicates deficiency. This was caused by catching wind after illness, named Fengshui [Wind Edema]. Used Shenmi Tang from *Qianjin Fang* plus Mahuang; one dose reduced panting by half. Then used Weiling Tang to swallow Shenshi Ru Zhu Wan; within two days, urination increased, edema reduced by seventy percent, and after several days of regulation, full recovery occurred. This shows ancient formulas contain profound principles; their application depends on the practitioner's wisdom.
