**[Names]** Kou (from *Ben Cao Gang Mu*), Cai Bo (same), He Shi Cao (same), Lu Tai.
Li Shizhen said: The character "Cong" (Scallion) is derived from "Cung" (window). It is straight and hollow outside, resembling a window that allows passage. "Kou" means grass with holes; hence the character contains "Kong" (hole). The KOU pulse (a floating, large, and empty pulse resembling a scallion stalk) also resembles this shape. When first sprouted, it is called Cong Zhen (scallion needle); leaves are Cong Qing (scallion green); skin is Cong Pao (scallion robe); stem is Cong Bai (scallion white); juice within leaves is Cong Ran. It suits all foods, hence called Cai Bo (vegetable elder) and He Shi (harmonizer).
**[Collection and Explanation]** Su Gong said: There are several types of scallions. Mountain scallion is called [missing character] cong, which treats diseases similarly to Hu Cong (foreign scallion). There are two types consumed by people: one is Dong Cong (winter scallion/frozen scallion), which does not die in winter, can be propagated by division but bears no seeds; the other is Han Cong (Han scallion), whose leaves wither in winter. For consumption or medicinal use, Dong Cong is best, with superior flavor.
Zheng Baosheng said: There are four types of scallions: Winter Cong is frozen scallion; it declines in summer and thrives in winter, with soft and delicious stems and leaves, found in Shan Nan and Jiang Zuo regions; Han Cong has hard stems and thin taste, with withered leaves in winter; Hu Cong has coarse and short stems and leaves, with roots resembling Jin Deng (golden lamp); [missing character] Cong grows in valleys and is not used medicinally.
Su Song said: Medicinal use employs Shan Cong and Hu Cong; food uses Dong Cong and Han Cong. There is another type, Lou Cong, also a variety of Dong Cong, called Long Jiao Cong (Dragon Horn Scallion) in Jiangnan, widely planted in Jing Chu, with red skin and stems branching like an octagon, hence the name.
Wang Rui said: Long Jiao is also Dragon Claw Scallion, or Sheep Horn Scallion. Roots grow on the stem for transplanting.
Li Shizhen said: Dong Cong is Ci Cong, sometimes called Tai Guan Cong (Imperial Cook Scallion). Its stems are soft, fine, and fragrant, surviving winter, suitable for tribute to the Imperial Kitchen, hence multiple names. Han Cong is also Mu Cong (Wood Scallion) due to its hard stems. Dong Cong bears no seeds. Han Cong flowers in clusters at late spring, appearing blue-white. Its seeds are pungent, black, wrinkled, and tri-lobed. Harvest and dry in shade, preventing mold; suitable for sowing or transplanting.
**Scallion Stem White**
**[Flavor and Properties]** Pungent, Neutral. Leaves: Warm. Rootlets: Neutral. All are non-toxic.
Tao Hongjing said: Scallions have cold and hot properties; white parts are cold, green parts are hot. Green scallion should not be used in decoctions for Shang Han (Cold Damage).
Kou Zongshi said: Scallion primarily promotes dispersion; excessive consumption confuses the spirit.
Meng Shen said: Scallion is suitable for winter consumption. Do not eat excessively, as it damages hair and beard, causes deficiency qi to rush upward, leading to closure of the five zang organs, due to its ability to induce sweating through bone joints.
Sun Simiao said: Eating raw scallion in the first lunar month causes You Feng (wandering wind/rash) on the face. Raw scallion with honey causes diarrhea. Roasted scallion with honey obstructs qi and can be fatal.
Zhang Zhongjing said: Raw scallion with dates causes illness; with dog or pheasant meat, it often causes blood disorders.
Li Shizhen said: Those taking Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) or Chang Shan (Dichroa Root) must avoid scallion.
**[Therapeutic Actions]** Decoction treats Shang Han chills and fever, stroke-induced facial swelling, and induces sweating (*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing*). Treats severe bone and muscle pain from Shang Han, throat obstruction (Hou Bi), calms the fetus, brightens eyes, removes evil qi from the liver, stabilizes the middle jiao, benefits the five zang organs, and detoxifies hundred medicines. Roots: Treat Shang Han headache (*Bie Lu*). Mainly treat epidemic febrile diseases, headache with mania, cholera with leg cramps, Ben Tun Qi (rushing qi syndrome), Hong Xiang Jiao (podagra/foot disease), heart and abdominal pain, dizziness, and stop mental oppression (*Tang Ben Cao*). Unblock joints, stop epistaxis, promote urination and defecation (Meng Shen). Treat Yangming dysentery and hematochezia (Li Gao). Harmonize exterior and interior, stop bleeding (Ning Yuan). Remove wind-dampness, body pain and numbness, heart pain from intestinal parasites, stop yang collapse in adults, Yin Du abdominal pain, Pan Chang Nei Diao (infant umbilical hernia with colic), gestational hematuria, promote lactation, dissipate breast abscesses, benefit tinnitus, apply to dog bites, and counteract earthworm toxicity (Li Shizhen).
Kill toxins from all fish and meat (Shi Liang).
**[Elucidation]** Li Yuansu said: Scallion stem white is pungent, sweet, and neutral, with strong aroma and thin flavor, ascending and yang. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian, specializing in dispersion to unblock upper and lower yang qi. Thus, *Huo Ren Shu* uses Lian Xu Cong Bai Tang (Scallion White with Roots Decoction) for severe Shang Han headache. Zhang Zhongjing uses Bai Tong Tang (White Connective Decoction) with scallion white for Shaoyin disease with clear diarrhea, interior cold with exterior heat, and cold limbs with faint pulse. If the face is red, add scallion white to Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction). If there is abdominal pain, remove scallion white. Cheng Wuji explained: The Kidney dislikes dryness; pungent food moistens it urgently. Scallion white is pungent and warm to unblock yang qi.
Li Shizhen said: Scallion is one of the Five Pungent Vegetables in Buddhism. Raw is pungent and dispersing; cooked is sweet and warm. Exterior solid, interior hollow, it is a lung vegetable, suitable for lung diseases. The Lung governs qi, corresponds externally to skin and hair, and merges with Yangming. Thus, treated conditions mostly belong to Taiyin and Yangming, utilizing its dispersing and unblocking qi function. Unblocking qi resolves toxins and regulates blood disorders. Qi is the commander of blood; when qi flows, blood moves. For metal wounds and fractures with bleeding and persistent pain, Wang Qiu's *Bai Yi Xuan Fang* uses equal parts scallion white and sugar powder applied topically. Pain stops immediately without scars. Scallion leaves are also usable. Blowing salt into the urethra via a scallion tube treats urinary retention and acute bladder torsion with rapid effect. I have verified this on several patients.
