(From *Bencao Gangmu* / Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen states: Zhizhuxiang (Valeriana jatamansi), found in the mountains of Songpan, Maozhou, western Sichuan, is a root. It is black with thick fibrous roots, resembling a spider, along with Ben (Peucedani Radix) and Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma). It has an aromatic odor, and locals value it highly. Some say cats enjoy eating it.
Root
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Ward off plagues, treat sudden evil qi and essence, ghostly qi, and corpse transmission (Li Shizhen).
(From *Shennong Bencao Jing*, Middle Grade)
[Names] Baizhi (pronounced zhǐ, also chāng hǎi qiē), Cui (xǔ jiāo qiē), Guan (guān yīn), leaf name Ren (lì yīn), Yao.
Li Shizhen says: Xu Kai stated that the initial root stem is called Zhi; thus, the meaning of "Baizhi" (White Angelica) derives from this. Wang Anshi's *Zishuo* states: The fragrance nourishes the nose and the body, hence the character contains the component 'Chen'. Chen sounds like Yi, meaning to nourish. Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi* states: In Jin it is called Cui, in Qi it is called Ren, in Chu it is called Li, and also called Yao. It grows in low, damp places, possessing fragrant virtue similar to orchids. Therefore, Qu Yuan sang of Lan and Zhi in his *Sao*, and the materia medica names it Fenxiang and Zefen. Ancients called it Xiang Baizhi (Fragrant White Angelica).
[Collected Explanations] *Mingyi Bielu* states: Baizhi grows in river valleys and low damp areas of Hedong. Roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun.
Tao Hongjing states: It is now found everywhere, especially abundant in Jiangdong. Leaves can be used for incense blending.
Su Song states: It is present in all regions, particularly in Wu. Roots are over a chi long, varying in thickness, white in color. Branches and stems rise more than five cun above ground. Leaves emerge in spring, swaying opposite each other, purple, about three finger-widths wide. Flowers are white with a slight yellow tint. Seeds form after entering the Dog Days; stalks wither after Start of Autumn. Roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun. Yellow and moist specimens are best.
Kou Zongshi states: Do not harvest those growing in clusters of four, known as Sanggong Teng. Also avoid using Malan Gen (Pilea Nummularia Root).
Root
[Processing] Kou Zongshi states: After harvesting, scrape off the soil skin, finely slice, and steam equally with Huangjing slices (Polygonati Rhizoma) for one fu period (approx. 2 hours). Dry and remove Huangjing before use.
Li Shizhen states: Modern practitioners wash and scrape the roots, cut into inch-length segments, mix evenly with Duanshi (Calcined Alum), dry, and store, to prevent insect damage and maintain whiteness. For medicinal use, lightly roast.
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
Zhang Yuansu states: Warm in temperature, bitter and very pungent in flavor. The properties and flavors are light, belonging to Yang. It is a guiding herb for the Hand-Yangming channel. Combined with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), it circulates through the Hand and Foot-Yangming channels, and also enters the Hand-Taiyin channel.
Meng Shen states: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) acts as its guide. It is incompatible with Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), and can control Xionghuang (Realgar) and Liuhuang (Sulfur).
[Indications] Treats women's leukorrhea (red and white discharge), blood obstruction, vulvar swelling, alternating cold and fever, headache invading the eyes causing tearing, promotes flesh growth, moisturizes complexion, and can be used as facial cream (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Treats wind pathogens, prolonged thirst, vomiting, fullness in both hypochondria, wind pain, dizziness, and itchy eyes. Can be made into plaster (*Mingyi Bielu*). Treats red eyes with pterygium, removes facial scars, supports miscarriage prevention, breaks old blood, tonifies new blood, treats breast abscesses, back carbuncles, scrofula, intestinal wind hemorrhoids, sores, tinea, stops pain, and discharges pus (Chen Cangqi). Can erode pus, stop stabbing pain in heart and abdomen, treat women's dripping blood and lower back pain, and metrorrhagia (Zhen Quan). Relieves Hand-Yangming headaches, wind-stroke with cold/heat, Lung-channel wind-heat, and wind-bi dryness/itching on head and face (Zhang Yuansu). Treats sinusitis, epistaxis, toothache, supraorbital pain, intestinal wind constipation, hematuria, women's wind-blood vertigo, reverse regurgitation/vomiting, antidotes arsenic and snake bites, and knife/arrow wounds (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Hao states: Baizhi generally treats wind conditions. Its aromatic nature opens the nine orifices; it is indispensable for inducing sweating.
Liu Wansu states: Treats Zheng-Yangming headaches and heat-jue headaches by adding this herb.
Li Dongyuan states: Used with Xin Yi (Magnolia Flower) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) for nasal diseases; used in Neituo San to promote flesh growth, indicating its entry into the Yangming channel.
Li Shizhen states: Baizhi is white and pungent, governing Hand-Yangming Geng Metal; warm in nature and dense in aroma, governing Foot-Yangming Wu Earth; its fragrance ascends, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung channel. The Lung is the younger brother of Geng and the son of Wu. Thus, its indications do not depart from these three channels. Diseases of the head, eyes, eyebrows, and teeth are wind-heat of these three channels; leukorrhea and carbuncles are damp-heat of these three channels. Wind-heat is dispersed by pungency; damp-heat is eliminated by warmth. As the chief herb of Yangming, it also treats blood and fetal diseases, discharging pus, generating flesh, and stopping pain. According to Wang Qiu's *Baiyi Xuanfang*: Wang Dingguo suffered from wind headache. He sought the famous doctor Yang Jie in Duliang. After taking three pills, the illness vanished instantly. Requesting the prescription, it consisted solely of Xiang Baizhi (Fragrant White Angelica), washed, dried, powdered, and formed into pills the size of bullet seeds with refined honey. Chew one pill at a time, dissolving it in tea water or Jingjie (Perilla Leaf) decoction. It was named Duliang Wan. This medicine treats wind headache and vertigo, and is effective for women during pregnancy/postpartum, wind-cold headache, and wind-blood headache. Dai Yuanli's *Yaojue* also states: For headache with heat and lumps on the neck, it is very suitable. Furthermore, *Xianshen Yinshu* states that planting Baizhi repels snakes. Thus, the formula for pit viper bites recorded in *Yijian Zhi* utilizes what the snake fears, although the materia medica does not mention this.
Zhu Zhenheng states: *Yaoxing Lun* says Baizhi can erode pus. Currently, it is used to treat leukorrhea where there is putrid pus in the intestines, leaking continuously with a foul odor, leading to cold pain in the navel and abdomen caused by putrid blood. This herb is required to discharge the pus. Baizhi 1 liang, Dan Ye Hong Shukui Gen (Malva Root) 2 liang, Baishao (White Peony Root) and Baikufan (Alumen) 0.5 liang each. Powdered, mixed with melted wax to make pills the size of wutzu seeds. Take 10-15 pills on an empty stomach and before meals with rice drink. Once pus is exhausted, use other tonics.
