[Rhinoceros Horn]
Qi is cold. Flavor is bitter, sour, and salty. Non-toxic. Mainly treats various toxic insect bites and Zhu diseases (a type of contagious or lingering disease), expels evil qi, ghosts, and miasma. Kills poisons such as Gengwen (Aconitum coreanum), Zhen feathers, and snake venom. Removes evil qi, preventing confusion and nightmares during sleep. Long-term use makes the body feel light.
Rhinoceros horn has a cold Qi, inheriting the cold Water Qi of winter from Heaven, entering the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its flavor is bitter, sour, and salty, non-toxic, deriving from the Wood, Fire, and Water flavors of the Southeast and North directions on Earth. It enters the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian (Wind-Wood), and Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian (Cold-Water). Both Qi and Flavor descend, belonging to Yin. The nature of all toxins is generally hot, and Zhu diseases are also formed by Damp-Heat. Rhinoceros horn can treat these because its Bitter-Cold nature clears Heat and disperses toxins. Cold Qi strengthens Kidney Water, and Bitter Flavor clears Heart Fire. When Fire descends and Water rises, Heart and Kidney interact, establishing the order of Heaven and Earth within the body. Thus, it can expel evil qi and kill ghosts, preventing confusion and nightmares. Cold Qi and Bitter Flavor execute the austere command of Heaven and Earth, thereby dispelling miasma and resolving Gengwen, Zhen feathers, and snake venom. Long-term use makes the body light because when Heart and Kidney interact, Yin and Yang harmonize; when Heart Spirit is clear, all vessels are regulated, resulting in a light body.
Prescription:
Rhinoceros horn combined with Cinnabar (Zhusha), Amber (Hupo), Gold Leaf (Jinbo), Himalayan Beechwood Powder (Tianzhuhuang), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Pearl (Zhenzhu), and Musk (Shexiang). Treats Wind-Heat causing惊痫 (convulsions and epilepsy). Combined with Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), Safflower (Honghua), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Arnebia Root (Zicao), White Peony Root (Baishao), and Burdock Fruit (Niubangzi). Treats Blood-Heat causing variola (smallpox) or related skin eruptions. Combined with Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin), Urine (Xiaobian - traditionally referring to processed urine or specific medicinal excreta), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Licorice Root (Gancao), and White Peony Root (Baishao). Treats hematemesis (vomiting blood) and epistaxis (nosebleed).
[Tiger Bone]
Qi is slightly warm. Flavor is pungent. Non-toxic. Mainly treats evil qi, kills Gui-Zhu poison, stops palpitations and fright, treats malignant sores, and scrofula (lymph node tuberculosis). The skull bone is especially effective.
(Roasted with butter)
Tiger bone has a slightly warm Qi, inheriting the Fire Qi of early summer from Heaven, entering the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian (Ministerial Fire) and Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian (Ministerial Fire). Associated with the Spirit of the West, flavor is pungent, non-toxic. Derives from the Metal flavor of the West on Earth. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both Qi and Flavor ascend, belonging to Yang. It removes evil qi because Pungent Flavor enters the Lung Meridian, and the Lung governs Qi; when Qi becomes austere and descends, all evil qi is eliminated. The poison of Gui-Zhu is a Yin-Evil poison. Tiger bone’s Pungent-Warm Qi enters the Sanjiao and penetrates throughout, thus killing Gui-Zhu. Deficiency of the Gallbladder causes palpitations and fright; Tiger bone’s Pungent-Warm nature warms the Gallbladder, thus stopping palpitations. Malignant sores are Wind-Toxin sores. The tiger is a Metal beast of the West; when the tiger roars, wind arises, and Metal controls Wood. Wind-Toxin belongs to Wood, so Tiger bone treats it. Scrofula is the toxin of the Shaoyang Gallbladder and Sanjiao. It is treated because Pungent Flavor controls Wind-Wood toxin. The skull bone has dense Qi, hence it is especially effective.
Prescription:
Tiger bone combined with Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Papaya (Mugua), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), Yam Rhizome (Shanyao), Cornus Fruit (Shanzhuyu), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Lycium Fruit (Qizi), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), and Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi). Treats flaccidity syndrome (Wei syndrome) with weakness and inability to walk. Combined with Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie), Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo), Stephania Root (Fangji), Atractylodes Rhizome (Maoshu), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Heshouwu), Coix Seed (Yiren), and Papaya (Mugua). Treats unilateral bi-syndrome with numbness and insensitivity. Combined with Danggui Root Body (Guishen), White Peony Root (Baishao), Roasted Licorice Root (Zhigancao), Dipsacus Root (Xuduan), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Baijiao/Ejiao), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong). Treats Bi syndrome resembling white tiger pain (severe gout-like joint pain). Combined with Dragon Bone (Longgu) and Polygala Root powder (Yuanzhi), named Yuzhi San. Treats palpitations and fright. Long-term use enhances intelligence. Combined with Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao) and White Peony Root (Baishao) soaked in wine. Treats arm pain.
