[Ajiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin)]
The nature is neutral. The flavor is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats internal bleeding in the heart and abdomen, extreme exhaustion, chills resembling malaria, pain in the waist and abdomen, and soreness and pain in the four limbs. It treats metrorrhagia in women. It calms the fetus. Long-term consumption lightens the body and tonifies Qi.
Ajiao has a neutral nature, inheriting the metal energy of autumnal convergence, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet and non-toxic flavor obtains the central earth taste of the earth, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its descending action exceeds its ascending action; its color is black and texture moist, belonging to Yin. The heart and abdomen are areas traversed by the Taiyin Meridian. Internal bleeding with extreme exhaustion occurs because the Spleen fails to control blood, leading to internal hemorrhage and extreme debility. Yin is the guardian within; when Yin is deficient, internal Qi becomes lax, resulting in shivering and aversion to cold resembling malaria. It treats these conditions because the sweet flavor can tonify Spleen Yin. The waist and abdomen are places where Yin resides; Yin deficiency causes empty pain. Ajiao, being black, nourishes Yin, thus alleviating pain. The four limbs are governed by the Spleen; soreness and pain occur because Blood fails to nourish the sinews. The sweet flavor tonifies Spleen Qi; since the Spleen controls Blood, pain in the four limbs naturally ceases. Metrorrhagia in women results from the Spleen's failure to control Spleen Blood; the sweet flavor helps control Spleen Blood, stopping the bleeding. The ability to calm the fetus is also due to its function of nourishing Blood. Long-term consumption lightens the body and tonifies Qi because the neutral nature benefits Lung Qi; the Lung governs Qi, and when Qi is abundant, the body feels light.
Prescription:
Ajiao combined with Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Gouqizi (Lycium Fruit), Baishao (White Peony Root), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), and Xuduan (Dipsacus Root) treats Bingzhong Louxia (uterine bleeding or prolonged spotting). Combined with Baishao, Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Shengdihuang, Baijiao (Ajiao), Guishen (Angelica Sinensis Root), Gouqizi, Duzhong, and Xuduan, it treats Taixia Xuexue (vaginal bleeding during pregnancy). Combined with Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Baishao, and Jizihuang (Egg Yolk), named Huanglian Ejiao Tang (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction), it treats Shaoyin Disease (disease of the Shaoyin channel characterized by heart-kidney imbalance), restlessness, and inability to sleep. Combined with Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) and Shengdihuang, it treats hematemesis (vomiting blood) and epistaxis (nosebleed). Combined with Huanglian and Bai Fuling (Poria) made into pills, it treats Li Ji Chi Bai (dysentery with pus and blood in stool).
[Antelope Horn]
The nature is cold. The flavor is salty. It is non-toxic. It primarily brightens the eyes, tonifies Qi, raises Yin, removes stagnant blood flowing downward, wards off Gu poison, avoids water disasters and inauspicious events, and prevents nightmares for sound sleep.
Antelope horn has a cold nature, inheriting the water energy of winter cold, entering the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its salty and non-toxic flavor obtains the water taste of the north, entering the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian (the organ of cold water). Both its nature and flavor are descending, belonging to Yin. The Bladder Meridian originates at the inner canthus of the eye; its cold nature clears Fire. When Fire is cleared, Water is sufficient, and vision is bright. Tonifying Qi refers to the salty-cold property benefiting insufficient Kidney Qi. Raising Yin refers to the salty-cold property benefiting the Kidney; when Kidney essence is sufficient, the Zongjin (major tendons) become strong. The salty flavor breaks Blood stasis, and the cold nature clears Heat, thus treating the downward flow of bad blood. Gu poison is damp-heat toxicity; salty-cold properties clear damp-heat, hence its efficacy. Antelopes possess spiritual intelligence, thus warding off evil spirits and inauspicious signs. Salty-cold properties benefit the Kidney; when Kidney Water is sufficient, clarity and brilliance are achieved, preventing nightmares and ensuring sound sleep.
Prescription:
Antelope horn combined with Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: use substitutes in modern practice), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Hupo (Amber), Tianzhu Huang (Bambusa Textilis Mucus), Jinbo (Gold Leaf), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus) treats Dian Kuang (mania and epilepsy). Combined with Gouqizi, Ganju (Chrysanthemum Flower), Gujingcao (Evodia Fructus), Shengdihuang, Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Nvzhenzi (Ligustrum Fruit), and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), it treats Gan Re Mu Yi (corneal opacity due to Liver Heat).
