[Lurong (Deer Antler)]
Properties and Flavors: Qi is slightly warm, taste is sweet, non-toxic. Indications: Metrorrhagia with foul blood, alternating chills and fever with convulsions and epilepsy, tonifying primordial qi, strengthening willpower, promoting tooth growth, and delaying aging.
Analysis: Deer antler has a slightly warm qi, inheriting the wood qi of spring's ascending nature, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It has a sweet taste and is non-toxic, obtaining the central earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its aroma and flavor both ascend, belonging to Yang. The Liver stores blood, and the Spleen controls blood. If Liver blood fails to store properly, Spleen blood loses its control, resulting in metrorrhagia and foul blood. Deer antler's slightly warm qi can reach the Liver, and its sweet taste can support the Spleen; thus, it treats these conditions. "Alternating chills and fever with convulsions and epilepsy" refers to chills and fever triggered by convulsions or epilepsy. The Liver is regarded as the "General." When Liver blood is deficient, Liver qi becomes hyperactive, carrying turbid fire upward, leading to fright or epilepsy. Deer antler's sweet taste nourishes blood, and its slightly warm qi guides fire downward, thereby stopping the chills and fever associated with convulsions and epilepsy. "Tonifying qi" means that slightly warm qi benefits Yang qi, while sweet taste benefits Yin qi. Sweet and warm substances aid the qi of both Yin and Yang; when Qi is abundant and vigorous, the will becomes strong. Deer antler belongs to the bone category. Teeth are the surplus of bones. The sweet and warm taste promotes growth, hence it aids tooth growth. When primordial qi is sufficient and blood and qi are abundant, aging is delayed.
Prescription Applications:
Deer antler combined with Niuxi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Boguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Rongrong (Cynomorii Herba), and Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) treats lower back pain and impotence.
Deer antler combined with Baijiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Yangqishi (Yangqi Stone), Rongrong (Cynomorii Herba), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Baren (Platycladi Semen), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), and Dansha (Cinnabaris) made into pills, named Banlong Wan (Banlong Pill), treats various deficiency syndromes. Specifically soaked in wine, it treats sexual dysfunction and impotence.
Deer antler combined with Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Xiaohui (Foeniculum Vulgare Fructus), and Yangshen (Ovis Kidney) made into pills treats lower back pain with inability to turn the body.
[Baijiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin)]
Properties and Flavors: Qi is neutral, taste is sweet, non-toxic. Indications: Damage to the Middle Jiao, exhaustion from overwork, lower back pain, emaciation, tonifying the Middle and benefiting qi, treating amenorrhea and infertility in women, relieving pain, and calming the fetus. Long-term use lightens the body and prolongs life.
Analysis: Donkey-hide gelatin has a neutral qi, inheriting the metal qi of autumn's descending nature, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. It has a sweet taste and is non-toxic, obtaining the central earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its aroma and flavor descend more than they ascend; its texture and taste are rich, belonging to Yin. The "Middle" refers to Spleen Earth. "Damage to the Middle and exhaustion from overwork" refers to individuals with Spleen deficiency who injure their primordial qi through excessive labor. The Spleen is the source of Yin qi; when the source is dry, Yin qi is exhausted. Donkey-hide gelatin treats this because its sweet taste benefits Spleen Yin.
"Lower back pain and emaciation" occur because the Spleen is the source of Yin qi and externally connects to the muscles of the body. If Spleen Yin is deficient, Kidney Yin is also deficient, causing lower back pain and muscle wasting. Donkey-hide gelatin treats this because its sweet taste tonifies the Spleen, and its neutral qi benefits the Lung and nourishes the Kidney.
"Tonifying the Middle" refers to tonifying the Qi within the Spleen. "Benefiting qi" occurs because the Lung governs Qi, and neutral qi benefits the Lung. The Spleen controls blood; amenorrhea and infertility in women result from the Spleen failing to control blood. Donkey-hide gelatin's sweet taste benefits Spleen Yin, thus treating the condition. When Spleen blood is insufficient, dryness causes pain. Donkey-hide gelatin's sweet taste nourishes blood, thus relieving pain. When blood is sufficient, the fetus is anchored, hence it calms the fetus.
Long-term use lightens the body and prolongs life because donkey-hide gelatin's neutral qi benefits the Lung; since the Lung governs Qi, sufficient Qi makes the body feel light. Its sweet taste benefits the Spleen; since the Spleen controls blood, sufficient blood ensures proper digestion of food, thereby prolonging life.
