[Honghua (Safflower)]
The qi is warm. The taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats postpartum blood dizziness and lockjaw, colic caused by incomplete expulsion of evil blood in the abdomen, and a dead fetus retained in the uterus. All are taken after decocting with wine.
It also treats gu poison.
Honghua has a warm qi, inheriting the mild wood qi of spring, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its taste is pungent and non-toxic, acquiring the metal taste of the West, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Both its qi and taste ascend; it belongs to Yang. The Liver is the zang organ that stores blood and is the meridian of life generation. Postpartum blood dizziness and lockjaw occur because postpartum liver blood fails to be stored; when the liver becomes dry, wind flares up vigorously, thus causing blood dizziness and lockjaw. To treat wind, one must first treat the blood; when blood flows smoothly, wind extinguishes itself. Honghua is pungent and warm, nourishing and moistening the blood, thus treating these conditions. Colic from incomplete expulsion of evil blood in the abdomen and a dead fetus in the uterus are all due to cold-blood stagnation failing to flow, unable to nourish the Liver. Honghua is pungent and warm, invigorating blood and smoothing the Liver, thus treating these conditions. Decocting with wine is used to borrow the blood-invigorating and blood-moistening power of wine. Treating gu poison works because pungency and warmth disperse, allowing the poison to be resolved.
Prescriptions:
Decoct Honghua and mix the juice with urine from an uncircumcised boy to take. Treats retained placenta and postpartum blood dizziness.
Combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma). Treats incomplete expulsion of postpartum evil blood.
[Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma)]
The qi is slightly cold. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It clears heat in the chest and nourishes the skin and hair. Long-term use promotes qi and thickens beard and eyebrows. (Stir-fried with vinegar)
Xiangfu has a slightly cold qi, inheriting the metal qi of late autumn, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet and non-toxic, acquiring the earth taste of the center, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its qi descends and its taste is harmonious; it belongs to Yin. The chest is the domain of the Lung. Skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung. The Lung governs qi; when qi stagnates, heat arises and skin and hair become scorched. Xiangfu is sweet and cold, clearing the Lung, thus clearing heat in the chest and nourishing skin and hair. Long-term use promotes qi because its slight coldness clears the Lung; when the Lung is clear, qi increases. Beard and eyebrows are the surplus of blood. The Spleen controls blood. Sweet taste benefits the Spleen; when Spleen blood is abundant, beard and eyebrows grow.
Prescriptions:
Raw Xiangfu ascends to the chest and diaphragm and reaches the exterior skin and hair; cooked Xiangfu descends to the Liver and Kidney and penetrates the waist and feet. Charred black, it stops bleeding. Stir-fried with urine from an uncircumcised boy, it enters the Blood aspect to tonify deficiency. Stir-fried with salt water, it enters the Blood aspect to moisten dryness. Stir-fried with green salt, it benefits the Kidney. Stir-fried with wine, it unblocks meridians. Stir-fried with vinegar, it enters the Liver. Stir-fried with ginger juice, it transforms phlegm-fluids. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), it tonifies Qi. Combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), it tonifies Blood. Combined with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), it removes stagnation. Combined with Doukourén (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), it regulates Qi. Combined with Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), it directs Qi downward. Combined with Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Lanceae Rhizoma), it resolves depression.
