[ Sesame Seed (Black) ]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats emaciation and weakness caused by damage to the Middle Jiao. It tonifies the Five Zang organs, enhances Qi strength, promotes muscle growth, fills the marrow and brain. Long-term consumption makes the body light and prevents aging. Those that are black are superior. (Steamed with wine and dried in the sun.)
Sesame possesses a neutral qi, inheriting the cooling Metal qi of autumn, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet and non-toxic taste corresponds to the central Earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
As the seed among the Eight Grains, it also enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its aroma and taste rise more than they descend, belonging to Yang. Yin is the guardian within. "Damage to the Middle" refers to injury to Yin blood. The Lung is the source of fluid production; the Spleen governs blood; the Heart masters blood. Sesame enters the Spleen, Lung, and Heart meridians; its sweet and neutral nature benefits blood, thus treating damage to the Middle. The Spleen governs muscles; when the Spleen is dry, it leads to thinness and weakness. Sweetness moistens the Spleen, thus treating emaciation. Internally is Yin, externally is Yang. "Five Neis" refers to the interior of the Five Zang organs, where Yin essence is stored. Sesame is moisturizing, thus tonifying the Five Neis. When Yin is deficient, vitality declines; once the Five Zang are tonified, Qi strength naturally replenishes. The Spleen governs muscles; sweetness moistens the Spleen, so muscles naturally grow. Marrow and brain are transformed from Yin Qi. Sweetness and neutrality benefit Yin; as Yin grows, marrow and brain are naturally filled. Long-term consumption: sweetness benefits the Spleen, Spleen blood becomes moist, thus preventing aging; neutral qi benefits the Lung, Lung Qi becomes abundant, thus making the body light.
Prescription:
Sesame combined with Chrysanthemum Indicum (Gan Ju), Asparagus Cochinchinensis (Tian Dong), Phellodendron Amurense (Huang Bo), Rehmannia Glutinosa (Sheng Di), Polygonum Multiflorum (Shou Wu), Platycladi Seed (Bai Ren), Mulberry Bark (Sang Pi), Achyranthes Bidentata (Niu Xi), Lycium Chinense (Qi Zi), and Ophiopogon Japonicus (Mai Dong) made into pills. Treats hemiplegia.
Combined with Atractylodes Lancea (Mao Zhu) made into pills. Treats Spleen dampness.
[ Rice Sprout ]
The qi is warm. The taste is bitter. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats downward movement of Qi due to Cold in the Middle, and clears heat.
Rice sprout possesses a warm qi, inheriting the generating Wood qi of spring, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its bitter and non-toxic taste corresponds to the Fire flavor of the Southern earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Its aroma and taste rise more than they descend, belonging to Yang. The "Middle" refers to the Spleen and Stomach. Grain falls into the soil; warmth can disperse cold, thus treating Cold in the Middle. Bitterness drains downward, thus moving Qi downward and clearing heat.
Prescription:
Rice sprout combined with Honey-fried Licorice (Zhi Cao), Amomum Villosum (Sha Ren), and Atractylodes Macrocephala (Bai Zhu) made into pills, named Gushen Wan. Opens the Spleen and stimulates appetite.
Combined with Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), Poria Cocos (Bai Fu), White Peony Root (Bai Shao), Atractylodes Macrocephala (Bai Zhu), and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi). Treats anorexia due to Spleen deficiency.
