[Cherokee Rose Fruit / Jin Ying Zi]
Qi is neutral. Taste is sour and astringent, non-toxic. Primarily treats spleen deficiency diarrhea and dysentery. Stops frequent urination. Astringes essence and qi. Long-term consumption makes one resistant to cold and lightens the body.
Jin Ying Zi (Cherokee Rose Fruit) has neutral Qi, inheriting the metal Qi of autumn convergence from Heaven. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sour and astringent, non-toxic, obtaining the flavors of growth in the East and convergence in the West, corresponding to Metal and Wood.
It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It enters the Hand Yangming Dryness-Metal Large Intestine Meridian. Both its Qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. The "Ten Formulas" states: "Astringents can remove slippage." Spleen deficiency diarrhea and dysentery indicate large intestine incontinence. Jin Ying Zi's sour and astringent taste thus secures against slippage. Urine is excreted when Qi transformation occurs. Jin Ying Zi's neutral Qi benefits the Lung Qi; sufficient Lung Qi enables reception and retention, so frequent urination stops naturally. The essence of the five Zang and six Fu organs is stored in the Kidney. Its discharge is due to the Liver's dispersing action. Jin Ying Zi's sour taste astringes the Liver; if the Liver does not disperse excessively, essence and qi remain secure. Long-term consumption of sour-neutral substances benefits Lung Qi. The Lung governs skin and hair; firm skin and hair resist cold. The Lung governs Qi; abundant Qi lightens the body.
Preparation:
Jin Ying Zi combined with Euryale Seed (Qian Shi) forms a pill named Shui Lu Dan (Water-Land Pill). It benefits Qi and tonifies true Yuan. Decocted into paste or made into pills with Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) powder. Treats kidney-deficiency diarrhea.
[Eucommia Bark / Du Zhong]
Qi is neutral. Taste is pungent, non-toxic. Primarily treats waist and knee pain. Tonifies the Middle Jiao, benefits essence and qi. Strengthens sinews and bones, fortifies willpower. Eliminates itching and dampness in the genital area, and dribbling urine. (Stir-fried with salt water)
Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) has neutral Qi, inheriting the descending Metal Qi of autumn from Heaven. Its taste is pungent, non-toxic, obtaining the moistening Metal flavor from Earth. It specifically enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its ascending effects outweigh its descending effects, yet it belongs to Yin. The waist is the mansion of the Kidney; the knees are governed by the Kidney. Du Zhong's pungent-neutral nature benefits Lung Qi; Lung Metal generates Kidney Water, so waist and knee pain cease naturally. The Middle Jiao is the guardian of Yin. Pungent-neutral benefits Lung Qi; the Lung is the source of fluid transformation, so sufficient Yin tonifies the Middle. The initially generated water is called Essence, which is Tian Yi Water. Du Zhong enters the Lung; the Lung governs Qi and generates water, thus benefiting essence and qi. When essence and qi are benefited, the Liver has blood to nourish sinews, and the Kidney has marrow to fill bones, thus strengthening sinews and bones. The Lung governs Qi; pungent-neutral benefits Lung Qi, making Qi robust and grand, thus fortifying willpower. The lower yin area refers to the perineum, a collateral branch of the Ren Mai. Itching and dampness refer to dampness. Du Zhong's pungent-neutral nature moistens the Lung, allowing water passages to open and dampness to move. Urine is excreted after Qi transformation; dribbling indicates Qi fails to retain. Du Zhong benefits Lung Qi; when Qi is solid, it can retain essence. Long-term consumption of pungent-neutral substances benefits Qi; abundant Qi lightens the body. Pungent-moistening nourishes Blood; abundant Blood promotes longevity. Stir-frying with salt water directs it to the Kidney; stir-frying with vinegar directs it to the Liver, following the principle of similarity.
Preparation:
Du Zhong combined with Dipsacus Root (Xu Duan) and Amomum Fruit (Sha Ren) treats miscellaneous conditions during pregnancy. Combined with Dipsacus Root (Xu Duan) and Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) made into paste pills, treats frequent miscarriage. Using only this herb, wine-fried and made into pills, treats back and waist pain.
