(Liang Shang Chen, also known as Wulong Wei) The nature is neutral, slightly cold. Non-toxic. It must be collected far from fire and smoke sources, specifically in the center of halls and palaces. After sweeping it down with a broom, collect it immediately, pass it through a sieve, and then use it. It shows remarkable efficacy for sudden epistaxis caused by Zhong E (sudden evil invasion); it produces immediate effects for macules appearing due to Yang Du (yang toxicity) in Shang Han (Cold Damage), accompanied by extreme restlessness and thirst. (Hei Nu Wan [Black Slave Pill] by Zhang Zhongjing uses this herb to treat such conditions.) It governs abdominal pain and dysphagia, and resolves soft sores on the head. Additionally, dust and coal from old houses can treat swollen and bleeding gums. Therefore, dust from thatched roofs is often used to eliminate coughs. (Mixed with Shi Huang [Mineral Yellow], Kuandonghua [Flos Farfarae], and menstrual cloths from women into powder, mixed with water, applied to thatch, dried, placed in a bamboo tube, and inhaled/swallowed, recovery is assured.)
Hu Gu (Tiger Bone)
The taste is pungent, the nature is slightly hot. Non-toxic. It is found in forests and mountains everywhere; those that are yellow and from male tigers are superior. One must verify that the tiger was not killed by poisoned arrows (those killed by poisoned arrows cannot be used medicinally, as the poison may permeate the bone and blood, harming humans greatly; only those killed by nets should be used). Upon acquisition, coat with su (clarified butter) and roast until crisp. Do not decoct into liquid; prepare only as powders or pills. Be aware of three substances with which it is incompatible: Shuqi (Radix Bupleuri Preparata), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), and Cishi (Magnetitum). It treats Feng Bi (Wind-Damp Bi syndrome) because the tiger's roar summons wind (symbolizing Wood being controlled by Metal); it tonifies soreness in the knees because the tiger walks with powerful legs. It kills Zhu pathogenic factors (chronic infectious diseases), stops palpitations in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), for which the skull is sought; it strengthens sinews and bones, relieves Wind-Pain in the lower body, for which the tibial bone is suitable. Eyes are collected to settle and resolve toxic sores from bites; gallbladders govern pediatric Ganji (malnutrition) and dysentery, as well as convulsions and epilepsy. Weigu (Vitality Bone) is located on both sides of the ribs (The tiger's vitality bone resembles the character "Yi" [乙], one cun long, obtained by breaking the flesh. There is also one at the tail tip, but inferior to the rib one). Carrying it daily increases one's prestige. Tiger eyes resemble white stones (When tigers see at night, one eye emits light while the other observes objects. Hunters wait and shoot; when the arrow arrives, the gaze falls to the ground. Obtained eyes resemble white stones). Those who possess them can walk and rest alone at night. Fur repels evil and cuts off epidemic malaria effectively; consuming muscle enhances strength and stops nausea particularly well. Hanging the nose above the door predicts the birth of a son (Pregnant women hanging a tiger nose above the door main the birth of a male child); it still treats Dianji (epilepsy); sealing sores with feces beautifies them, and long-term consumption benefits people. Species are numerous, differing in red and white colors; forms are small, fierce, and agile. Hunters sometimes obtain them via netting. It calms the Five Zang organs, repairs severe injuries. Strengthens sinews and force, fortifies gallbladder willpower. Do not consume in the first lunar month (The first month corresponds to Yin [Tiger], hence taboo against eating tiger and leopard meat); violating this damages the Shen (Spirit). Fat applied to hair promotes growth; the nose repels evil spirits immediately. Skull ash leached with water, used for washing hair, completely removes dandruff. Fur made into coats wards off cold.
(Chen Jiamo) Commentary: The ancients established Hu Qian Wan [Tiger Stealth Pill], using only Hu Jing Gu (Tibial Bone of Tiger) in the formula; its principle is profound and elegant. Essentially, Xu Jin [deficient Metal] belongs to Yin; Feng Mu [Wind-Wood] belongs to Yang. The tiger's roar summoning wind demonstrates Wood being controlled by Metal, which is inevitable. Thus, for conditions such as stiffness and cramping of feet and knees, and painful swelling, using bone to regulate can chase away wind and stop pain. This embodies the meaning of Yin emerging from Yang storage. Moreover, all the tendons, joints, and strength of the tiger originate from the tibial bones of the front paws. Because its nature and Qi are stored within, people frequently use it, hence named "Tiger Stealth." If modern practitioners use other bones, they do not conform to the meaning of Tiger Stealth.
