[Fulonggan (Dragon's Liver)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Non-toxic. It is the yellow earth from the center of the stove bottom facing the pot. The best quality is selected for its deep color and brownish hue. Mixed with vinegar or pounded garlic into a paste, it is applied to eliminate carbuncles, swelling, and toxic vapors. Applied as a water-based poultice on the umbilicus and changed frequently, it wards off seasonal epidemics and calms the fetus. It treats aphasia due to wind-stroke, irritability, stops metrorrhagia, hematemesis, and coughing upward. It can also be finely pounded and taken with water.
There is also Baicaoshuang (Soot from Hundred Herbs), named Guodimo (Pot Bottom Ink). It is an essential agent for treating blood disorders, because black overcomes red (blood). Do not apply it to sores, as it will leave marks like seals when entering the flesh. There is also the black soot from the chimney flue, which is also the black coal on the stove front. Recorded in medical texts, it can generally stop bleeding.
[Dongbitu (East Wall Earth)]
Warm in nature. Non-toxic. Only select aged earth from the east wall, because it has been baked by the morning sun for a long time. (A question arises: Dongbitu is superior due to morning sun baking. Nanbitu (South Wall Earth) is also baked by the noon sun daily; why is it discarded? Answer: Suwen states: "The qi of Shaohuo (Lesser Fire) is vigorous, while the qi of Zhuanghuo (Excessive Fire) declines." The sun is the true fire of Taiyang. At sunrise, it is Shaohuo. Being lesser, it becomes vigorous, hence it is selected. By noon, it is Zhuanghuo. Being excessive, it declines, hence it is not selected.) One must select earth that has been there for many years (hundreds of years are excellent), grind and sieve it into fine powder. It supports the Spleen and benefits the Stomach, based on the principle of "like attracts like" (since Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth). Stir-fried with Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), it specifically stops chronic diarrhea; ground together with Xianqiao (Clam Shell), it can treat smallpox sores. Applied to remove eye pterygium, rubbed to treat body tinea. It treats spring fevers, colds, plagues, and malaria, and removes lower body hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse. Therefore, earth from shoe soles, ground and swallowed with water, is effective for those suffering from unfamiliar terrain sickness (acclimatization issues) in other places (using one's own worn shoe sole is best). Yellow earth used for casting bells, ground and taken with wine, shows remarkable merit for sudden heart pain and Zhwu evil qi. Shurangtu (Mouse Hole Earth) treats wind-stroke causing muscle and bone spasms and pain; use after sun-drying. Yanketu (Swallow Nest Earth) (from wild swallows is best) treats Fengsao Yin zhen (wind-induced urticaria/itching); mix with water for wet application.
[Duan Shi (Calcined Stone/Lye)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Acrid and toxic. Available near mountains everywhere, produced by kiln firing of stones. Varieties range from refined to coarse, requiring careful selection. Those decomposed by water irrigation and heat steam have inferior potency; those decomposed by natural cracking under wind exposure have superior potency. It can fix Sulphur and remove tin tarnish. When used, soak in vinegar overnight, drain, dry, and grind into powder. Mixed with Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Dan Yin (Bile) and dried in shade, it stops bleeding from knife and axe wounds. Steamed thoroughly with Bai Nuomi (White Glutinous Rice) and applied, it removes warts and moles at the root. Mixed with ashes, leached juice, and boiled into ointment, it breaks open abscesses and boils. For postpartum vaginal laxity, decocted wash promotes contraction. In brewing, if the taste is sour, adding a little resolves it. It induces abortion very quickly and expels parasites with great efficacy. Another type is Donghui (Winter Ash) from the furnace, made from Di, Hao, and Li plants. Because the fire is kept burning continuously during winter cold, its acrid and hot nature exceeds that of the other three seasons. Used in prescriptions, this type is superior. Boiled into ointment to erode flesh, it specializes in surgical treatments. Hot ash from the stove, mixed with vinegar into cakes, is good for frequent warming compresses for cold pain in the heart and abdomen.
[Baicao Hui (Hundred Herbs Ash)]
Collected abundantly during the Dragon Boat Festival (on this day, collect one hundred types of herbs while dewy, dry them in shade, and burn them into ash). Stops axillary odor immediately. (Mix ash with Jinghua Shui (Well Water) into a ball, dry in sun. Re-burn until white, mix with strong vinegar into a cake, clamp tightly between both armpits. When a painful, stifling rash erupts from the whole body, it heals. Wash with a little water; no more than two or three times needed.)
